REPUKE State Rep: 'some girls, he said, 'they rape so easy.'

Lawmaker Says "Some Girls Rape Easy"

Minnesota state Rep. Roger Rivard (R) "is drawing heat for saying that his father had told him when he was young that 'some girls rape easy' as a way to warn him that a woman could agree to sex but then later claim that it wasn't consensual," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Said Rivard: "He also told me one thing, 'If you do (have premarital sex), just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry.' Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she's not going to say, 'Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.' All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she's underage. And he just said, 'Remember, Roger, if you go down that road, some girls,' he said, 'they rape so easy.'

And the rural "Mom" just seems to tune it all out.

Perhaps they were raised to feel subordinate.

I suppose that if abstinence is your primary form of birth control, you need to scare the Bee jesus out of your teen boys. If they make the mistake of succumbing to those massive hormonal changes, they are going to be a rapist, because by God, that embryo is coming to full term. A "rapist" and a father at the same time. The guilt trip just might get it done. Throw in a little comment before Sunday Services and those young men will abstain for sure. If by chance they don't, then it is the "sluts" fault.

These friggen people aren't normal. There is something definitely wrong with their mental faculties. I have never heard such tripe as I have these last few months from various idiots on the right. Todd Akins (R), (Dr.???) Paul Broun R - GA, Michelle Bachmann and this one who I've never heard of before, Paul Rivard - where the hell do they get these people?

To be fair, do we Dem's have any totally batshit crazy representatives? I'm not a political wonk so maybe we have some in our party.

But if you look at the whole statement it has a ring of truth to it because false rape allegations do happen. But the part where he says "girls rape easy" sounds stupid as if it's easy or guys should go out and commit the act of rape. I bet he regrets saying this stupid shit now.

Two fourteen-year olds? I take it you can't mean that.

The Repub in question was a minor when his father told him this. So, old Dad was trying to stop his son from having teen sex-- using the most ill-informed, misogynistic misinformation possible. You won't believe some of the things my Dad told me.

It's not so atypical of the ignorance and mis-information strategy abstinence-based sex education uses to scare teens away from sex. Some of those falsehoods, unfortunately, are remembered as wisdom and stick around with tragic results.

. . . rape can take place between any age, but you said for minors it (sex) was always rape. Therefore, I thought you meant it was always statutory rape. If an adult is involved, yes, we have no disagreement.

But between say, a fifteen and a thirteen year old? Yes, non-statutory rape can and does take, but if both parties were game, are you saying that's statutory rape for the oldest?

I think I can understand the point he's trying to make although I don't agree with it. Women who lie about being raped when they haven't been may exist (I've known one, but she was suffering from schizophrenia ) but women who hide the rape and lie about not being raped when they have been because of societal pressures far outnumber them. Rape carries with it a stigma in our society that he apparently doesn't appreciate. He makes it sound like women carry on capriciously with claiming they've been raped as though it's nothing. Women are far more likely to pretend a rape didn't happen instead of pretending one did.

And the way he expresses himself about it is disgusting and uncivilized. Where do they find these jerks?

grabbed so much power--not just elective power, but also, and perhaps more important, the power of money and of media control, our public discourse has been badly coarsened. Since they are the ones who get to shape the debate, and since they tend toward such ideas and such ugly ways of expressing them, people end up hearing such things more and more often.

When something is said frequently, casually, and in a wide range of venues, it becomes defanged, domesticated. IOW, it no longer seems shocking, but rather familiar and even comfortable--at least to those who were never all that appalled by it in the first place and who only refrained from saying such thigns because they knew other people would look down on them for saying them.

The fact that our public attitudes had moved toward tolerance and civility in political and professional discourse for a while meant that the temporarily marginalized troglodytes like this guy did not feel they could openly express their ugliest opinions and attitudes. They never abandoned them, mind you, and they never stopped expressing them among like-minded people; but they knew that if they said them openly in company that did not consist entirely of their own kind, they would be shamed and shunned.

Now, though, they constantly hear, right out in public, many things that used to be considered unacceptable in polite company. And since they only listen to FOX, only frequent RW message boards and websites, and only talk to people who think the same way they do, they have lost their awareness that polite people simply do not say such things out in the open where everyone can hear them.

They are honestly taken aback when their comments are greeted with outrage.

"A young lady"

Notice how Republicans never say the word "woman" in any rape or abortion debate? I've been casually monitoring this since I noticed it with Aiken and his minions. Male fundies rarely use the word "woman," reciting instead, "the mother," "the victim," etc.

"Girls" is at least closer to the gross reality.
