When Romney starts with the BS about you have had 4 years to turn things around, Obama should look him straight in the eyes and say something like this:
Governor, it was your party's policies that put this country into the recession that economists say is the worst this country has faced since the great depression. It was your party that came into office with a budget surplus and proceeded with massive tax cuts and failed to fund two wars. It was your party that took a surplus and turned it into massive deficit spending.
Your economic positions are simply duplicates of the same ones that put this country's economy at risk. May I remind you that after eight years of your party in the White House, this nation was losing as many as 800,000 jobs per month, banks were on the verge of failing, and the auto industry was on the edge of bankruptcy. That was awaiting me when I took office.
Since that time, my administration has made many economic proposals that have been met with partisan obstruction. Your party has stood in the way of a faster recovery. That is confirmed by the words of the Minority Leader of the Senate who said on the Senate floor that the top priority was to make sure I did not get a second term.
And may I remind you that in part because of my administration's stimulus plan, passed by Congress without a single Republican vote, there have been 31 straight months of private sector job growth and the unemployment rate has dropped to 7.8%.
The unemployment rate would be even lower if public sector employment had not been lagging behind. But it is your party that is fighting against putting more fire fighters, teachers, policemen, and emergency medical professionals to work. It is your party that does not want to rebuild the infrastructure of this country. It is your party that refused to even consider the American Jobs Act. It is your party that recently blocked a Senate bill that would have put veterans in training for jobs or placed them in jobs. And those programs were fully funded within the bills.
I know that reducing the deficit is a priority for this nation. That can and will be done, but it will not be accomplished if this nation returns to the failed policies that you advocate. So, Governor, I fail to see how your party has the credentials to tell the American people that they should believe you when you say, without specifics, that you know how to make things better. Neither you nor your party have the credibility to make that claim.
The economy is improving. We need to keep moving forward.

(69 posts)This is a PERFECT closing argument. It lays out the facts and shows where we were, how far we have come, and how far we could have been if not for obstruction from his party while he stood aside and said nothing.
This is excellent.

(12,799 posts)I was under the impression that the Vets bill was subjected to an anonymous hold prior to the Senate recess. The hold was cleared after the Senate had recessed. Question: Am I mistaken? (If so, it wouldn't be the first time.)

(12,799 posts)I was thinking of the Veterans' COLA adjustment. We should hope that the Senate gets on that when they get back too.

(12,799 posts)It seems to me Republicans do not hesitate to use Vets as a political football. It isn't about a debt our country owes, it's about false flag patriotism. That may backfire on them someday.

(6,160 posts)Well, we know that Republicans are liars and hypocrites on all things. But it is astromically disgusting when they use Vets for their shenanigans.
I wish more vets would wake up to that fact.

(17,199 posts)That's what the American people need to hear, in the next debate, and in every stump speech.
Tennessee Gal
(6,160 posts)They just need to find the appropriate time in the next two debates to say it directly to Romney.

(25,771 posts)A stimulus that would have been even more effective if not for the changes the Republicans demanded . . . before they all voted against it anyway.

(6,160 posts)It simply came from my heart and my understanding of the facts.
I don't understand why someone from the Obama hasn't said something similar. Perhaps they have, but it has come in bits and pieces.
I think it has to be concise and include all the points available.
