As a student at Harvard Law School, then-bachelor Barack Obamas practice of wearing a gold band on his wedding-ring finger puzzled his colleagues.
Now, newly published photographs of Obama from the 1980s show that the ring Obama wore on his wedding-ring finger as an unmarried student is the same ring Michelle Robinson put on his finger at the couples wedding ceremony in 1992.
Moreover, according to Arabic-language and Islamic experts, the ring Obama has been wearing for more than 30 years is adorned with the first part of the Islamic declaration of faith, the Shahada: There is no god except Allah.
The Shahada is the first of the Five Pillars of Islam, expressing the two fundamental beliefs that make a person a Muslim: There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is Allahs prophet.
Sincere recitation of the Shahada is the sole requirement for becoming a Muslim, as it expresses a persons rejection of all other gods.

(4,119 posts)What if it was his father's ring, a father he barely knew and it was all he had of him. What would be wrong with him wearing it and respecting the religion of his father. It's nothing to do with the ring or his religion or his place of birth...we know what it's about. And if there is a God or Karma I wouldn't want to be one of these haters.

(14,858 posts)I heard all about it from my crazy-ass relatives - the ones who believe all the ridiculous bullshit in those loony e-mails the RWers spread around.
You see, Muslims are allowed to do any and all of those things that are normally prohibited, as long as they're doing them to mislead the infidels while they secretly work to bring about an Islamic dictatorship.
Therefore, when we see the President eat pork, that is PROOF that he's a secret Muslim!

(39,961 posts)And neither of them ate pork or drank beer to "mislead" my infidel self. That's the same kind of crap that has been said about Jewish people, that it is okay to lie to non-Jews and to mislead non-Jews. It is so asinine that it doesn't even bear repeating.
This "secret handshake club" bullshit of religion is going to be the death of us. Want to be popular and part of a secret society? Great. Do great works, shut up about doing them, and don't try to form a little club and insinuate that you are better than everyone else because you are a part of this "club".

(53,339 posts)Does Obama Really Wear A Muslim Shahadah Ring?

The two Arabic-language and Islamic experts Corsi cites are by no means neutral. One, Mark A. Gabriel, is an anti-Islam activist, describing himself as a Christian evangelist. He is also spreading the truth about Islam. The other, Joel Gilbert, has been an active anti-Obama activist, involved with the Conservative Political Action Committee, having produced one film entitled Atomic Jihad: Ahmadinejads Coming War for Islamic Revival and Obamas Politics of Defeat, and another entitled Dreams From My Real Father, which repeats the old, debunked assertion that Frank Marshall Davis is Barack Obamas real father.
Corsi, Gabriel and Gilbert all have the appearance of people with an axe to grind against Barack Obama and against Islam. But, lets not rely upon ad hominem attacks against their conspiracy theory that Barack Obama is wearing an Islamic ring as a code to indicate solidarity with other Muslims around the world. Its possible for kooky people to occasionally stumble upon the truth, so lets look at the facts.
...
There isnt much similarity between Barack Obamas ring and the examples of Shahadah rings that I found. In fact, I couldnt find a single example of a Shahadah ring that looks anything all like Barack Obamas ring. (In case youre wondering, Snopes hasnt written on this particular conspiracy theory yet.)
Next, lets look at the part of the Shahadah script that Jerome Corsi, Mark Gabriel and Joel Gilbert say can be seen in the photograph of Obamas ring, along with other representations of the same piece of the Shahadah script, found elsewhere.

(39,961 posts)He's a Democrat, and well, he's black. That automatically makes him a foreigner that is bad for this country. Can't you see that? He can't even get the ring right, even if that invalidates that it is such a ring. If he did get the ring right, well, then, see?!

(2,117 posts)These dipshits are so pathetic, they are so desperate for their guy to win that they try to create their own reality where Obama is who they say he is. Remember the so-called doctored photo of Obama as a child with a "black" hand on his side(that was obviously darker due to shadow)?
President Obama eats pork sausage and drinks beer.
But, yeah, let's pick on his wedding ring, because there is no way that he is legitimately married, legitimately President of the United States, or legitimately a human being.
That's pretty much the summation of the right wingnut platform - President Obama isn't a legitimate human being, and I'm pretty sure we all know why they feel that way. It makes me mad as hell at times that people can't accept an intelligent, measured, articulate leader simply because he has more melanin in his skin than some people find appropriate.
Screw them for being racist jerks.

(39,961 posts)doing an "outreach" to tell lies. How a preacher can stand in the pulpit and tell his congregation to lie astounds me.
That right there is why people have less and less trust of religious leaders.

(62,325 posts)And if someone has to explain THAT piece of jewelry, then anyone wearing any kind of religious jewelry needs to explain themselves also.
I eg, received a gift from my two room mates after college, who were from India, they were Hindus. I absolutely loved it. It was a pendant featuring Krishna. I don't remember anyone demanding to know why I wore it. That should be obvious. If someone wears a ring like that, who cares? Why do YOU care?
The Far Right has some serious issues and to see anyone spending their time and effort on something like this, which means nothing to most normal people, simply proves why they should be ignored, marginalized, and definitely kept far away from any position of power in this country.
People are free still in this country to practice whatever religion they choose and Christians are free to wear any kind of jewelry they want to.
It is those questioning those rights that I want an explanation for.
