Portrait of a Presidency: 115 Of White House Photographer Pete Souza's Best Shots

Through adversity and triumph, public victories and private setbacks, Chief Official White House Photographer Pete Souza and his team of photographers have relentlessly documented the actions of the President, First Lady and Vice President since entering office in early 2009.

As the President bids for a second term, LightBox asked Souza to reflect on his time photographing President Obama and share an edit of his favorite images that he and his staff made during the President’s first term in office; the photographs not only offer fascinatingly candid insight into the life of the President, but also paint a portrait of Barack Obama the man, husband and father.

especially the ones with his daughters. I have to admit, though, that in every photo of POTUS with boehner or cantor, I wanted him to kick them in the balls!

Aside from anything political or partisan, what a great man and awesome family. I feel like one of us is the prez. We need another 4 years of this badass.

per gingrich just days ago:

“Obama really is like the substitute [National Football League] referees in the sense that he’s not a real president,” Gingrich told Greta Van Susteren on Fox News Tuesday night. “He doesn’t do anything that presidents do, he doesn’t worry about any of the things the presidents do, but he has the White House, he has enormous power, and he’ll go down in history as the president, and I suspect that he’s pretty contemptuous of the rest of us.”

President Obama's critics really are SUCH fools.

Souza's work is amazing. Just beautiful.

I thought he would have included the one with Obama being lifted by the restaurant owner but perhaps that wasn't a Souza photograph. It is one of my favorites and one that the president got a lot of good press on I think.

to be seen by as many people as possible. I am impressed by the calm, dignified informality he seems to extend to all around him. The picture of the Euro-leaders at Camp David, he is sharing a bench seat on the patio.

I just love the picture of him playing in the snow w/ the girls.

I love having a president who's strong and capable yet so sweet and loving with children. I genuinely admire him... "love" might be a little too strong a word, since I've never met him, but I am so proud that he is the leader of our country. Can Romney's supporters possibly feel the same way about him? Do they think he is a kind and compassionate person? Or is it all about money to them?
