Obama campaign hammers Romney ahead of his latest attempt to overcome his foreign policy stumbles

Obama campaign hammers Romney ahead of his latest attempt to overcome his foreign policy stumbles

by Jed Lewison

Later today, Mitt Romney will once again try to establish his foreign policy credibility with a speech attacking President Obama's national security record. But even before Romney steps to the podium, the Obama campaign has released a new television ad and memo designed to undercut Romney's latest gambit.

The ad, which you can watch above, hammers Romney's embarrassing overseas trip in July and his irresponsible reaction to the attack in Benghazi. It will air in Virginia, though it is largely aimed at undercutting. The campaign's memo both makes the case for President Obama's leadership as well as elaborates on the Mitt Romney weaknesses highlighted in their ad.

The fact is that Barack Obama has one of the strongest national security records of any President in generations – he has decimated al Qaeda’s leadership, taken out Osama bin Laden, ended the war in Iraq, provided unparalleled support to Israel, produced unprecedented pressure on Iran, strengthened our alliances, and restored our standing in the world.

In contrast, Mitt Romney has, throughout this campaign, raised more questions than answers about what he’d actually do as President. He supported the Iraq war and said that removing all of our troops from Iraq was “tragic,” he called Russia - not al-Qaeda - our "number one geopolitical foe," and he said that he wouldn’t have set a timeline to end the war in Afghanistan. Those aren’t policies, those are misguided talking points – and the American people deserve more from someone running to be commander-in-chief.

Throughout the campaign, Romney has vacillated between making a fool of himself and engaging in dangerous saber-rattling. Perhaps the reason is that he really doesn't have any foreign policy experience, period. Unless, of course, you count investing in companies that were pioneers in outsourcing as foreign policy experience. Or, for that matter, having accounts in Switzerland and The Cayman Islands. And, while we're at it, let's not forget where he got the money to start Bain Capital.
