Forget Big Bird, what about the Mid-Currituck Bridge?

In case you didn't know, the Mid-Currituck Bridge would be the third bridge to Bodie Island, the peninsula that's in between the Virgina state line and Hatteras Island.

The cost? 650 million dollars.

Color me perplexed. The area it leads to is over-developed. It can't support any more housing or businesses, unless you destroy the natural areas that make it worth visiting in the first place.

As far as I can tell, the bridge's major function would be to provide easier access to mainland golf courses.

So why is this even being considered? Could someone fill me in?
