Lunch lady slammed for food that is 'too good'

Annika Eriksson, a lunch lady at school in Falun, was told that her cooking is just too good.

Pupils at the school have become accustomed to feasting on newly baked bread and an assortment of 15 vegetables at lunchtime, but now the good times are over.

The municipality has ordered Eriksson to bring it down a notch since other schools do not receive the same calibre of food - and that is "unfair".

Moreover, the food on offer at the school doesn't comply with the directives of a local healthy diet scheme which was initiated in 2011, according to the municipality.

1. Why not... RAISE the calibre of food elsewhere?

As a cook, someone tells me to "turn it down a notch," I'm telling them - daring them to fire me. it's one thing, if there's a budget issue, or some sort of actual guideline for serving food is being violated, fine, but "you're too damn good, stop!" just ain't going to happen!

ahem.....she is apparently adding to the quality without raising cost for the district....

rather than dumb it down for all, seems to me she should be promoted to their school's nutritional council to consult.

3. Well, it sucks, but this isn't reflective of American educational issues. This is a Swedish school.

I just hope that Sweden's schools don't emulate this example with the achievements of its pupils.

Then why discuss it here? Everyone knows that Sweden, Norway and Finland are The Bestest Places On Earth!

You can argue a lot of things with me, as a cook, but my food being "too good" is just not one of them.

If I'm clear, her offerings are not harming the budget she works with. Why not have her consult with other schools in her district (or whatever it is in Sweden) to serve similar foods under budget, instead of taking her food away from the children who are accustomed to it?

7. Well, that's the Problem. That's the insanity right there.

The "powers that be" don't want us to think/do better/ or 'build a better mousetrap', if you will....they just all want us to "conform".

That's why this article was published. Because someone realized how INSANE it is that this cook is being lambasted, rather than being promoted! That's why I posted it here.

edit to add: 'Don't improve the standards of others, lower the standards so everyone is living equally in mediocrity.'....how we are told to live now, apparently

Thank you for posting the original article, BillyJack. I'm still astounded by the mindset, though by now I shouldn't be.

WHen the economy goes to shit do we band together against those who are profiting from it? No, instead we turn on our neighbors, teachers, police, fire, unions in an attempt to pull them down so we all suffer.

20. You do know White Castles may be one of the greatest culinary creations ever right?

You can feed a child nothing but White Castles and they would grow up perfectly healthy. There have been studies done to prove this. You should repent your post...I'm going to have to get some frozen ones (from the store) shipped to me again. Now I'm getting the White Castle blues
