Body Language Guy says Romney Registered Mostly Negative Emotions

<Romney, the widely acknowledged winner of the first debate, mostly registered negative emotions, Kowal said. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

"What Romney was able to do was really show anger, contempt, scorn and pride. Those are the emotions that his voters in his base feel," said Kowal, an assistant professor at Purdue University who has studied both Obama's and Romney's facial expressions since 2007.

Although the emotions Obama expressed were "positive" on the whole, he spent most of the debate displaying very little emotion at all, Kowal said.

"Overall it was a very neutral valence, which is a little concerning because the candidates need to make an emotional connection and I think Obama did not," Kowal said. "He was not expressive enough to really connect."

Republicans claim in a new ad that Obama sported a "smirk" at times during the debate, which they suggest is a sign that he was "uncomfortable" and struggling with his answers. Kowal, however, said that in that moment Obama's face registered more frustration than uncertainty, according to his software. >

Republicans were gloating last night, but not because Romney scored any big "points" but because he accurately reflected what they feel - they hate Obama with a passion (like we hated Bush) and they desperately want to attack Obama, even physically... so when Romney went on the attack verbally, it was like a wet dream for them... it was a classic schoolyard bullying scenario, and they got to live it vicariously with Romney as their surrogate. So of course they were euphoric because they got to live out their fantasy of "beating up" Obama, even if indirectly. So they say Romney "won" (the schoolyard rough-up). The fact that nothing Romney said was actually true, what was important to them was the verbal beating.

more often then I care to admit. he's a self-professed tbagger who is usually
kind of grouchy and aloof. day after debate, i wandered in and he was talking
with a toothless wonder and they were both hyper happy and barely approachable.
they know me as a lone liberal around these parts and were kind of smarmy and
sarcastic in their hellos and goodbyes to me...

everything is so effing weird in corn country these days.
