(71,265 posts)Obama could have ended the election last night. Instead he let Romney off the hook .
just not relevant to anything but the television horse race

(4,119 posts)...it's a bright and shiny new day.
P.S. Christ said love your enemies....and resist the urge to pound them into the ground...leave that to the media. (I'm not sure if he actually said that last part.)

(46 posts)What was said about Obama during the primaries with Hillary.
I was disappointed in his debate performance too, but every time I want to rip my hair out like Ed Schultz or other Dems I remember that THEY were not elected the 1st black president, Obama was. Maybe that doesn't mean much to some of you, but it's a huge deal to me, so he must be doing something right. Besides, he's run a brilliant campaign so far, yesterday he lost ONE debate BFD!

(20,136 posts)You really believe that even if everyone agreed Obama gave the best debate performance ever, the media would stop their bullshitting and lying?

But Obama needs to do better. I still love him.

(20,136 posts)My feeling is that Obama went in determined to focus on his own plans and policies. Romney told SO many lies that if Obama had tried to attack all of them, he would have wasted all his time doing it. For better or worse, right or wrong, I think that was Obama's mindset.

(26,045 posts)Presidential candidates always draw huge crowds at rallies, even losing ones. I was at a Dukakis rally in Seattle in the last days of the 1988 campaign, when it was clear the race was over, which was about that size. Enthusiasm of die-hard supporters tells us nothing; the polls starting tomorrow and running into next mid-week will tell us a lot more.

(2,795 posts)It's up 3% from yesterday. The poll was updated at 1pm today. I thought I read that included polling after the debates. Nate Silver, I believe, reported on it. He hasn't had that high of an approval rating since 2009.

(86,005 posts). . . just how tangential the debates would be to the support generated by the Obama camp so far . . . and, just how slim a chance it was that the folks Romney actually needs to attract were watching.

(2,544 posts)we'll see if the numbers back up your claim.
My Schenectady NY newspaper headline this morning read: "Romney: Victory in Sight"
No matter how much DUer's try to spin this, it was a horrible night, but hopefully it wasn't a game changer. The new polls will tell how much (if any) damage was done.
bigtree
(86,005 posts). . . that the 'undecided' voters Romney needs to attract probably didn't even tune in.
here is the relevant wisdom from Nate Silver:
"There are few undecided voters remaining and undecided voters may be less likely than others to have actually watched the debates."
and from Scott Clement:
More voters will watch Wednesdays debate than perhaps any other campaign event until Election Day, but a Washington Post-ABC News poll released this week finds one critical group of voters may skip out on the prime time face-off: Persuadable voters.
It's really not rocket science. If the only talking point Romney has perpetuated out of everything he said last night comes from the media horserace experts, instead of from his fast-talking debate rhetoric, he gains NOTHING.
this, from the WaPo opinion editor . . .
All the evidence suggests that for Romney, whether or not you believe he should be president, closing the gap and beating Obama is a bridge too far . . .
. . . If Romney would have to pull off a miracle to close the gap in national polling, he has no shot at matching the president in the electoral college. As mentioned above, forecasters commonly predict that Obama already has a big lead of safe and leaning states. If we assume Romney will improve in the polls, there would be around nine swing states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
Theres one problem here for Romney: He is trailing, and has been consistently trailing, in all but two North Carolina, where hes held a small lead, and Florida, this elections closest thing to a 50-50 state. Romney doesnt need to win two out of those nine; in almost every scenario, he will need six or seven out of those nine to win, including at least two or three states where he is behind by several points more than he is nationally.
