There must have been a huge spike for Obama on debate day, like 58% approval. reformist2 Oct 2012 #10

. . . that would be the case. It's really a shame, all the time spent today by allies hand wringing and second-guessing.

Actually this poll was taken before the debate. I'm sure the Romney bump will not last, at least I hope not.

Personally I'm thrilled with this daily tracking number but it usually takes a while to judge the lasting effect of events on a political race. Always be suspicious of instant analysis and quick tracking polls - they are rarely reliable long term.

But while we are waiting - I'll take 54%!

The Gallup tracking poll is a 3-day average, so in order to go from 50-54 in a day, the most recent data point must be crazy high, like 58%.

That tells me one of two things - either it was a fluke/outlier, OR, it shows that more people wanted to go with Obama on debate day, showing a possible reservoir of goodwill toward the president that his team might not know exists....

My advice to Obama... get out there are be hopeful, optimistic and upbeat.... the people out there like you and want you to succeed!
