A venerable public resource vs. an untrustworthy, job-killing corporado. Take him to the mat, PBS!

(938 posts)The federal investment in public broadcasting equals about one one-hundredth of one percent of the federal budget--or about $1.35 per person per year. Elimination of funding would have virtually no impact on the nations debt. Yet the loss to the American public would be devastating. Each day, the American public receives an enduring and daily return on investment that is heard, seen, read and experienced in public broadcasting broadcasts, apps, podcasts, and online. Numerous studies -- including one requested by Congress earlier this year -- have stated categorically that while the federal investment in public broadcasting is relatively modest, the absence of this critical seed money would cripple the system and bring its services to an end.
I did NOT expect this to happen... I expected for PBS to stay above the fray and just hope for the best (which I don't agree is the way to go, personally)... but, nope, they're fighting for their life. This is an opportunity to focus the public not only on the direct threat Romney poses, but on the value of Public Television... and they're taking it. KUDOS!

(111 posts)Then we can get the "Guy Smiley" muppet character to play Mittens (sorry to do that to you Guy Smiley!) and give him a dialogue where he "flip-flops" all the time,...........demonstrating to the kids "this is lying" ...... Kids are very astute. It doesn't take them long to figure out who the people are, that do what they say and say what they mean. They seem to remember "broken promises" a lot better than we adults do.........which goes without saying it doesn't take them long to figure out who they can count on and TRUST!

(12,325 posts)that only get the free channels which is about 4 to 5. Now he wants to eliminate an educational channel. That's why he lost the debate and argument. I think the American audience heard quite clearly what this man is up to.

(10,274 posts)who, because Cable Programming was not yet ubiquitous inside American households learned to spell, read, count, think critically and be decent Humans because the people at PBS actually gave a shit (and still DO) about PUBLIC education. Romney has NO IDEA how many people he truly offended with that remark last night, and he is going to pay the price for it.
"I'll fire Big Bird."
What an ass. Taking his hatred for "You People" out on little children who's only dream is to LEARN. (the ads just write themselves, don't they?)

(938 posts)Paula Kerger, the president and CEO of PBS, said Thursday she was stunned at Mitt Romney's comments during Wednesday's debate promising to pull funding from the public broadcaster.
"With the enormous problems facing our country, the fact that we are the focus is unbelievable to me," she told CNN Newsroom
snip
"We're America's biggest classroom," she said. "This is not about the budget. It has to be about politics."
She also pointed out that government funding does not go directly to PBS, who receives only about 15% of its budget from the government, but to its member stations. Some of those stations receive 50-70% of their funding from the federal government, meaning they would be shut down if de-funded, she said.

Wow... just wow... there MIGHT be some PAC ads with Big Bird if this keeps up
