Jonathan Chait: Romney's Successful Debate Formula: Lying

Romney won the debate in no small part because he adopted a policy of simply lying about his policies. Probably the best way to understand Obama’s listless performance is that he was prepared to debate the claims Romney has been making for the entire campaign, and Romney switched up and started making different and utterly bogus ones. Obama, perhaps, was not prepared for that, and he certainly didn’t think quickly enough on his feet to adjust to it.

I'm disappointed Obama wasn't prepared for the lies but that is exactly what happened. It's hard to prepare when the person you're debating might make up absolutely anything or even contradict themselves at any moment.

He just made of facts that seemed convenient. Who could forget "Trees are the major cause of smong?" But the media liked him; I don't think they like Romney.

must look this LYING right in the eyes and give it a full

double-barrel blast. Otherwise it is faced with confusion

in the undecideds, and that is a formula for 2000.

This is EXACTLY what Bush did to Gore, cling to his more
popular positions on the issues and watch the poll numbers
improve.
