I heard this last night and, at that moment, was dumbstruck. I had to go back this morning and find the exact quote because I wanted to make sure I understood correctly.
Unless I am mistaken... severely mistaken... Mr. Romney is saying that the poor and less fortunate shouldn't expect a social safety net. They can take care of each other. In their hovels. Under bridges and overpasses.
They can suggest he misspoke or meant something else, but I'm pretty sure he said exactly what he meant.

(36,286 posts)Mormon background. The Mormons are famous for taking excellent care of people in need, as long as they are fellow Mormons! So, Romney has a false image of how much volunteers can care for people in need.

(910 posts)I didn't search extensively, but all I could come up with was that some Mormon organizations let food banks use their machinery to turn peanuts supplied by the food bank into peanut butter. Does anyone have a list of LDS food pantries that are open to the poor?

(22,336 posts)And, frankly, what a lot of people (planning to vote for him) think. He was playing to his base with that. The country would be a harsh place for those without work.
