...those people who are less fortunate and can't care for themselves are cared by one another

"I interpret that as, one, making sure that those people who are less fortunate and can't care for themselves are cared by -- by one another" @ debate Time stamp: 22:15:43

I heard this last night and, at that moment, was dumbstruck. I had to go back this morning and find the exact quote because I wanted to make sure I understood correctly.

Unless I am mistaken... severely mistaken... Mr. Romney is saying that the poor and less fortunate shouldn't expect a social safety net. They can take care of each other. In their hovels. Under bridges and overpasses.

They can suggest he misspoke or meant something else, but I'm pretty sure he said exactly what he meant.

Mormon background. The Mormons are famous for taking excellent care of people in need, as long as they are fellow Mormons! So, Romney has a false image of how much volunteers can care for people in need.

I didn't search extensively, but all I could come up with was that some Mormon organizations let food banks use their machinery to turn peanuts supplied by the food bank into peanut butter. Does anyone have a list of LDS food pantries that are open to the poor?

When they defund Medicaid or 'shift it to the states' are they planning to dump seniors in assisted living and nursing homes out onto the street? What a vision for the future!

I think that statement reveals him as a crueler person even than George W. Bush, who at least talked about "compassionate conservatism."

And, frankly, what a lot of people (planning to vote for him) think. He was playing to his base with that. The country would be a harsh place for those without work.

and if you think of it in the context of $17K deduction limit...you know charitable contributions are going to evaporate.
