What happened to progressives lat night!!What we lost more than anything was the spin war.
I flipped to CNN to find James Carville and Vann Jones talking about how "presidential" Romney looked. I kept waiting for them to call out the 5-trillion dollar lies or amplify the "voucherization" of Medicare.
It didn't happen.
Chris Matthews was yelling about Obama's style, the process and Romney's aggressiveness while ignoring the content of what he said.

(18,530 posts)We have met the enemy and the enemy is us. It is not about the debate it is the about the spin. There is still time to set the record straight but we need our media voices to step up and stop shilling for the other side.

(22,156 posts)They just aren't credible or reasonable and I'm disappointed in them. They are shilling for their corporate masters. What did we expect?

(129,304 posts)His assinine fixation on anything "Irish" = perfect and is the light of the world (Kennedy, Clinton, and even Gingrich) clouds his entire judgement in his Matthews-o-centric universe. In the real world, arguments or debates don't always require brute force to resolve as is his apparent thuggish way of handling things.
Ed came at it similarly but not for the same reason.
And as a sidenote, that Rmoney gif is a riot!! Motor-mouth.

(2,480 posts)What the hell does he expect - go over and punch Romney - probably. We all want to punch him, but can't do that on live TV.
Ed was no better. AT least Tweety kind of composed himself.

(1,828 posts)This is where we fail again and again on the left. Instead of making lemonade out of lemons, we just curl up and cry. I get that the MSNBC pundits might not want to lie themselves and screech about how Obama killed Romney (that's what they do on Fox - whatever crap is shelled out by a GOPer, they claim it's gold). But as ever, they pile on the Democrat (in this case the president) and totally let the Republican off the hook (in this case, Romney).
They did the same thing to Gore and Kerry. They just ignored Bush's performance and instead hammered Gore for sighing, for his bad makeup job, for the way he stepped into Bush's personal space ... couldn't be bothered to give an honest evaluation of Bush other than, "We kind of want to have a beer with him!"
Same with Kerry. Kerry mopped the freakin' floor with Bush, but they still hammered him for every little thing they could think of. They brought up lies that had been told by Bush or the GOP, but instead of hammering the lies, they laughed about them (still can't get over how the media collaborated in the swiftboating of the only actual honorable veteran on the stage in those debates).
Until progressives learn to pivot the way the right does, we will continue to lose in the news cycle. Instead of focusing on the things our guy did wrong, they should at the very least be pointing out all the things the Republican did wrong. Romney may have won in style, which I'm ok with them admitting, but it pisses me off to no end that they spend all their time crapping on Obama while ignoring ROmney's lies. For me, that should be their job. Pointing out the SUBSTANCE of the debate.
But I don't know why I ever expect any differerent. On substance, Gore and Kerry beat the hell out of Bush. But you never would have known it from the press coverage, because all they could obsess about was style. It's shameful. Truly shameful. I don't know how they sleep at night.
