He probably did it unconsciously. She makes him feel that she knows more than he does and that she's smarter than he is. So out came his defensive/aggressive chauvinism in his effort to slap her down.

I've been there. Intelligent women of my age know all about this ego thing with men. We used to be taught never to do this because we would burst their fragile ego.

Had she said that, she'd be called "arrogant", "elitist", and every other slur the republicans could come up with. But, as it stands, I suspect that most people who heard that are thinking he's too stupid to be in her class. And, that he's the arrogant jerk.
