I have an unhealthy curiosity about finding the identity of Q (#Qanon). Is it some individual prankster or an astroturf group like the Tea Party? I find it pretty funny that Q has gone silent after the election loss. Good NYT article:

Now that a Dem will be in the White House (hopefully), we can probably expect to see a resurgence of the Tea Party complaining about the national debt...

I wouldn't be surprised if it started as a prank but then the Watkins realized it was worth co-opting.

(58,785 posts)when they lost control and their monster turned on them. I've read their getting these socially conservative but mostly economically progressive (for themselves) populists to fight against government spending was considered a peculiar but great victory -- until their monster broke their leash and tried to shut down the government, and with it the Republicans' giant sucking sound.
Given how much crazier they've become under Trump, I'd think the Kochs et all really should be afraid to try to harness them again. Trump's lead them full-fascist, and they're enraged that Trump didn't smash the nation to victory for them. It'll be interesting to see how many Trump can manage to hold onto. I've read authoritarians really hate finding they've backed a loser.
As for Q, just maybe the FBI or one of our intelligence services identified and put the fear of consequences in him? Like possibly happened with all the white power groups that made a lot of insurrectionary/terrorist noise and then went quiet when it was time to act. Hope so. Only speculation, of course.

(22,920 posts)Different theories as to the origin, including a mere prank on 4chan, but it quickly became co-opted when certain people saw how easy it was to weaponize it when it jumped to FB and reddit.
Q isn't one person; the prevailing belief is that it's usually a team of puppet masters that have shifted over time.
Mike Flynn has been involved as one of the most recognizable names. Steve Bannon too. At the very least they have been part of the team coming up with the strategy to weaponize the cult.
But the one consistent, actually two consistent people are Jim Watkins (owner of 8kun, and a purveyor of porn, including child abuse) and his son, Ron.
Ron resigned from 8kun I think on Saturday.
But here's the scary part. Another name that has been bandied about as having been part of the team is recently in the news, with Trump appointing him as Chief of Staff of DoD:
Ezra Cohen-Watnick
Personally, I don't think it has mattered for a while who Q is. It all took on a life of its own with grifters on different levels, like MLM. They're gonna ride the "Dems are demonic pedophiles" schtick for a long time. They don't even pay attention to the Qdrops. But that network will probably be used (manipulated) again and again and again. And we see how easily they radicalized many of them.
I thought the news about Jim Watkins' involvement and him peddling child sexual abuse would be the thing that blew it up but it had already metastasized too much. At this point, they only believe what they want and say everything else is fake news.
