This past weekend, my wife and I drove over 5 hours, one way, to canvass door to door and register voters in Columbus, Ohio. We left southern Illinois at about 3:00 a.m. and made it to the Obama For America headquarters on Broad Street at about 10:00 a.m.
We canvassed until nearly six p.m. and then canvassed again Sunday afternoon before heading home. We registered voters, re-registered others and helped still more apply to vote absentee ballots. We met a LOT of great folks and only a handfull of not-so-great folks.
We are both 63 and, although we were exhausted at day's end, we agree that the experience was more than worth our minor aches and pains. It was a VERY rewarding experience and made us feel actually involved in the process rather than simply arguing with the TV and hoping someone somewhere would "do something".
We "did something".
If you are within driving distance of Ohio, please consider making a commitment RIGHT NOW to "walk the walk" this next week or weekend. Even half a day would be a great help.
Go on---contact the post calling for Ohio volunteers pinned at the top of General Discussion and get hooked up with a place to make a difference. You'll be proud of yourself.

(13,776 posts)That's fantastic! You drove FIVE HOURS?!? And then did all that? Amazing!
Thank you SO much! When Ohio goes for Obama you and your wife can look at each other and know that you had a big part in that!

(53,339 posts)I went to Columbus as a kerrytraveler in '04 and thoroughly enjoyed canvassing and phone banking there. And Kerry won Franklin County by around 43,000 votes.

(22,271 posts)extremely invigorating about activism. You feel like you are the ones making something happen instead of sitting on the sidelines. I caught the activism bug in about '68 and have been goin' at it ever since. Oh, and
