I saw this live. The speculation is that she meant 'modicum.' I only support this theory because she didn't pull out her crayons and draw one on the wall of the set.

Meghan McCain Says Obamas Deserve an Emoticon of Privacy
Lest you think she meant some other word, Meghan McCain said it twice, in fact, on MSNBC today. But which emoticon signals privacy?

(8,791 posts)Just not well read. Obviously she's heard people using that word before and thought she heard emoticon, instead of modicum.

(12,530 posts)I've never gotten the sense that she's a world-class thinker, but this gaffe, though embarrassing, at least indicates that she's heard the word 'modicum'. Maybe I'm soft on her because almost all Republicans are worse than she is in all ways, but this didn't seem that huge to me. It's along the same lines as someone saying "for all intensive purposes", rather than "for all intents and purposes". No huge deal.

The Pais Hilton comparison is not a bad one.

(21,691 posts)Technically, it's a malapropism. And by trying to sound smart by using a fancy word she heard but didn't understand, she only succeeded in proving that she's dumb.

(6,086 posts)challenged but I believe she has the highest intention . Too many of the teens and twenty year olds, (hell, TOO MANY AMERICANS), mangle the language. They don't know how to express themselves lucidly. They think that "texting" and using what I term, "netlanguage" is the standard. Unfortunately, when they try to talk, they show that they have know real knowledge of English, po' thangs. It's scary, really because this it the next generation coming up, they're having children and teaching them to speak this way too.

(397 posts)She would be or at least vote Democrat. Forget what she says. I really get the feeling that in her heart she knows the GOP is bullshit.
