Our country is in deep trouble... a poll on whether we should use torture

appeared on the website of my local newspaper. The actual question is:

Should the U.S use torture to obtain information during interrogations?

Currently only 33% have voted no....and a whopping 67% are ok with it! Of that 67%, 20% say only in rare circumstances.

I ask myself.... "How would Jesus have voted?" Don't get me wrong... I am not a member of any religious organization....but over 9 out of 10 people in this country call themselves Christians. I am really at a loss for words....

I realize this... but the percentages are just hard to dismiss.

I would like to know the percentages of a question like this in a legitimate poll... even one here on the DU.

He eliminated the use of torture by his administration, but has done nothing to prevent future presidents from using torture, and reserved the right to decide to use it himself if he decides it is necessary (but has reserved it solely to himself, not the DoJ or the DoD).

and if it's not bad enough that it is such a barbaric thing to do, it's been suggested that the 'intelligence' gathered is sketchy. What is wrong with people?

I read somewhere you can take almost any random set of 1000 people and ask any question and get a pretty close understanding of how the rest of the country would feel. Of course if you specifically target certain areas you could skew the results. Marquette county is far from being a right wing haven. I just think people don't realize what torture is and how ineffective it is at getting legitimate information.

I don't consider this area much different than any other part of the country and I have lived in large cities... out west and in the Midwest. I also would have put this question as a poll here at the DU ...however at the moment I don't have a "star" so I couldn't.

are based not on real knowledge of torture but a sort of misinformed common wisdom. That people will talk on an emergency under extreme duress. That is how it is portrayed in too many action films where good guys hold out, get rescued while the "hero" breaks the "rules" and makes the bad guys squeal. That is ALL most people know or think about when asked the question as if everyone is a sensitive educated UN delegate.

Even if they disagree the "common wisdom" this is a red meat question which people are expected to answer in favor of strength and security. There are many such seemingly stupid and vile beliefs which when understood say only a few things about the state of the mob buried under a wall of ignorance.

Also, every human can be brutalized on many issues and get corrupted by that poison. Whatever the sick satisfaction involved the better angels are better and can prevail and people would be happier and buried inside the frustration most know it.

but in the case of the Teabag Taliban, I'll have to make an exception--just to give them a taste of their own medicine.
