in charge. The Romney/Ryan budget cuts to vets programs will hit disabled vets the hardest at a time when funds need to be doubled rather than cut. The care for disabled vets will increase sharply as the Afghan war continues. Too many disabled vets become "unemployable" permanently because of their injuries.
And disabled veterans really do not get enough disability pay to survive without working. Because disabilities are rated a large portion of payments are only partial. Losing limbs or even having PTSD hurts the whole person and not just part of that person. So any disabled vet goes into the job market with employment barriers that must be compensated for in some way. Employers today demand "perfect" employees in "perfect" health even if they are older.
So the final solution for the GOP is to force vets to sell pencils or poppies in the street. That is the reality of the GOP budget now and in the future. They are ready to take us back into the 1950's when it was common to see a vet selling pencils in the street.
ADDENDUM - Unfortunately I am old enough to remember the sights of veterans sitting on the sidewalk selling pencils. It was also very common to see veterans presenting artificial lapel poppies for donations to veterans' care and causes. It was in the 1950's when I was in grade school.

Coverage to poor vets, without service related problems, was expanded somewhat in the early 2000's. When the program cuts come (which now seem inevitable as 'select' dems and r's plot the budget in secret), it will be these poor vets, many of them Vietnam vets who will be likely to lose out.
