WASHINGTON, ) U.S. billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson has set a new record in political donations by giving $70 million to help Republicans in the 2012 elections, nearly triple the previous highest amount, according to news outlet Politico on Monday.
Adelson, 79-year-old chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp , has come to symbolize a new era in U.S. campaign finance that affords great power to individual wealthy donors through unlimited-spending outside Super PAC groups. These groups finance millions of dollars worth of advertising on candidates behalf.

(34,857 posts)Good thing he's 79...he probably won't be around in 2016.

(1,484 posts).....he is going to be around a lot less than until 2016, unless Romney is elected, that is. It seems that Adelson is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for having used his money to influence the outcome of elections in foreign nations (Something that is against federal law). I think there are also some other charges pending against him, (something about leaving his cash in the pockets of his pants when he sent them out to the Chinese laundry - if you get my drift).
That being said, if his buddy Mittens is elected, I am sure it will mean that he does no time at all. On the other hand, if Obama wins, justice will prevail and Shelly will die in prison. Can anyone wonder why he is willing to spend so much money to see that Romney is elected?

(22,271 posts)$70 million. Romney IS behind in the polls and everyone knows the solution to any political "problem" is to just throw money at it. Just ask Meg Whitman.

(31,706 posts)Sheldon appears to have a lot to be concerned about if his Bishop isn't selected...such as indictements for money laundering with his Chinese casinos. If he's blowing this much money to try to avoid a future prosecution, it sure is quite a tell.
While the FEC has always been a joke, in my dream world I'd love to see an investigation of that 70 million...how much of it was really his and how much he was laundering for others...
