Pope Ratzinger (R): "The butler did it."

Last edited Mon Oct 1, 2012, 06:31 AM - Edit history (1)

Pope & Vatican & MegaBucks Vatican BANK (money changers in the temple) have a stupefyingly long, plug-ugly track record of engaging in massive super-stank corruption.

But this time, as usual, the FINGER gets pointed away. The Pope's Butler gets blamed and then BURNED AT THE STAKE (figuratively) for squealing on ll Papa & Cronies

How Republican (international style) is that?

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The pope's once-trusted butler went on trial Saturday for allegedly stealing papal documents and passing them off to a journalist in the worst security breach of the Vatican's recent history -- a case that embarrassed the Vatican and may shed further light on the discreet {and grossly corrupt} internal workings of the papal household.

The AP's general consumption take on it all:

Paolo Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, goes on trial Saturday in the most sensational crime committed on Vatican territory since the 1998 double murder of the Swiss Guard commander and his wife. That case never came to trial because the suspect {{ahem, ahem}} killed himself.

Pope’s Butler Sentenced to 18 Months for Stealing Documents

Source: Associated Press

VATICAN CITY — The pope’s butler was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Saturday after being convicted of stealing the pope’s private documents and leaking them to a journalist.

Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre read the verdict Saturday two hours after the three-judge panel began deliberating the fate of the butler, Paolo Gabriele. The judge said the sentence was reduced to 18 months from three years because of mitigating circumstances, including that Mr. Gabriele had no previous record.

In his final appeal to the court, Mr. Gabriele said he leaked the pope’s private correspondence to a journalist out of a “visceral love” for the church and the pope.

In the courtroom was Mr. Gabriele’s father. It was the first time a family member has attended his weeklong trial.

Post Trial wrap-up from Down Under:

"The defendant said he was inspired by the Holy Spirit to rid the Vatican of ''evil and corruption'' and the main judge was from an aristocratic family that has served the papacy for generations who has been knighted by the Vatican.

"Gabriele on Saturday was found guilty of aggravated theft and sentenced to 18 months in prison, although Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said a pardon from the Pope was ''very likely'' to come soon, before the sentence was actually implemented..." - The Australian
