Looking forward to the first presidential debate next week, Mitt Romney has a plan: Knock President Obama off his game with some well-rehearsed "zingers," reports the New York Times:
Mr. Romneys team has concluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he has memorized and has been practicing on aides since August. His strategy includes luring the president into appearing smug or evasive about his responsibility for the economy.

(44,143 posts)I guess somebody thought that through. Wouldn't look good for Mitt to keep saying, "Obama is correct, and none of my ads and claims can survive a fact-check."

(8,379 posts)He can say "I've heard my opponent is going to use some clever repartee, I look forward to hearing what his advisors have written" and Romney will be done.
But Obama is so smart he no doubt is confident about his strategy.

(796 posts)An excellent tactic for Obama: Ask, "Is that your position today, or is that your position from yesterday?"
Next time: "Is that your position today or from last week?"
"Is that your position today or your position from 2008?"
By the third time, Mittie will be in a red-faced rage.

(796 posts)Obama can note:
By the way, it takes your team an average of 3 hours, 45 minutes to issue a retraction of your latest remarks, reverses your position 180 degrees, or "clarifies" what you might have meant. That is too long for this debate.
But this means in a typical campaign day, you get to have 4 re-writes, retractions, reversals.

(37,161 posts)... 1980 "There you go again" line, but to depend on them as a strategy? And telegraph it so nakedly?
Reagan was an excellent public speaker. His fan club may overblow his "Great Communicator" rep, but that reputation didn't come from nowhere. On top of that, Reagan had a copy of Carter's playbook, the debate briefing book used in now-infamous practice debates with George Will. He knew the points Carter would bring up, Carter's lines of argument and potential responses, all things that were enormous multipliers to his talents as a speaker. He could prepare his "zingers" ahead of time and had a pretty good idea of when to deploy them.
In contrast, one of his worst moments in the 1984 election was in trying to re-use the "there you go again" line against Mondale. It really didn't get him anything and it let Mondale slap him right back by reminding everyone that Reagan had been wrong when he used it against Carter.
Obama is a much more agile speaker than Mitt is. He can shift gears without grinding the clutch. If Mitt's depending on some pre-memorized 'zingers' and everyone knows he's doing that[/i, odds favor Obama giving him fencing lessons: in particular schooling him on the meaning of 'parry and riposte'.
Or maybe 'fish slapping:
