On April 15th 2011.That was a unanimous vote by the Repub Conference in the house to turn Medicare into COUPONS.
If that's not great ammo for down-ticket races, I don't know what is.
I want Nancy to get that gavel back.

How The GOP Plan To Kill Medicare And Medicaid Would Work:
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/04/the-reviews-are-in----gops-plans-for-medicare-medicaid-get-an-f-from-advocates-and-experts.php

On Tuesday, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) will introduce a 10-year budget proposal that would over time eliminate Medicare and Medicaid and replace them with less generous health care plans for the elderly, poor, and disabled. The reviews are in, from experts and advocates, and it looks like theres gonna be a fight.
Phasing Out Medicare
Starting with Medicare, Ryans critics attack his plan as a step back from the single-payer system that, despite looming financing problems, serves the elderly very well.
There ought to be a TV show called That 90s Show, said David Cutler, a Harvard economics professor and one-time adviser to President Obama. What Paul Ryan has in mind is to recreate the managed care era, do for the elderly what we rejected for ourselves.
Republicans will be loath to admit this, but the system Ryan has in mind for Medicare works a lot like dread ObamaCare, too. He developed it in concert with Alice Rivlin, who used to run the Office of Management and Budget for President Clinton. They propose giving the elderly a menu of private insurance options (think the health care exchange) and then subsidizing those plans based on need (think insurance credits). Thus, in addition to all the questions Republicans will have to answer about the plan from experts and stakeholders, theyll have to explain why the health care law is terrible for working adults, but a great idea for retirees.

(39,313 posts)and that's really the whole point, plus the elderly often make poor decisions about health without help and thus can be exploited..
I can't imagine they'd be allowed to have caps when dread deseases can occur .. so what you'd get is some kind of additional insurance -- none of this makes sense when the boomers don't have much savings! It's death panel stuff

(42,290 posts)It would be yet another complication for seniors, some of whom are barely able to keep up with basic PLUS supplemental coverage.
The chief advantage of Medicare is it's simplicity. Just apply.... and done.
The "coupons" or "vouchers" proposed by the Ryan plan are still mysterious and nodody knows how they'll work. But even with the minimal information on Ryan's plan, health care insurance WILL go up for seniors.
Simplicity. Sell that.

(163 posts)These Republicans have no shame and i hope that they will loose the House and Senate. What are they thinking? My Grandparents had to fight for and support FDR. My parents generation reaped the benefits of Progressives and my generation saw the decline of progressive policies and programs. Its time to restore and add on to those programs that uplift and create middleclass. What an insane road we have traveled these past 35 tears. I thank Jimmy Carter"s Grandson for helping expose Romney and his cohoarts and their disregard for so many of us

(522 posts)The rodents that will follow the one in front off a cliff? We have to stop these Republican Lemmings. My mother and my son depend on Medicare to be there when they need it. Thankfully both are in good health right now, but that could change overnight. One way to control medical costs is for everyone to be covered by insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. No doctor or hospital bill should go unpaid just to have the cost passed on to future patients.

(31,849 posts)someone would print up a simple mailer that reads:
"On April 15, 2011, Representative {fill in the name of gop representative} voted for the Republican House Member and Republican Vice-Presidential candidate paul ryan's budget that would end medicare as you know it."
Then place one in every mailbox/on every door in these republicans' district.

(31,849 posts)to make it more manageable ... send it to those constituents with households having members 50 years and above. That cohort could drastically impact turn-out AND anti-gop votes.

That's a real HOOT.
Hope the general public realize they are getting Health Care Benefits off of your backs and since they are all rich do not give a darn about us Citizens including those who are Veterans in the past and now.
NO MEDICARE but a Coupon worth on practical terms as WORTHLESS.

note: I print these 2 to a sheet on Avery 8.5 x 11 shipping labels; they stick great to car windows. I've made others that have lasted for three months so far, so they'll last at least to the election.
