Democrat Bob Kerrey and Republican Deb Fischer clashed Friday over whether efforts to put Social Security and Medicare on sound footings should focus entirely on people who are 40 and younger.

During an Omaha debate between the two Nebraska candidates for U.S. Senate, Fischer said she was unwilling to change future benefits for people over 40, describing theirs as promises that must be kept. She said she was open to cutting benefits for those who are younger.

But Kerrey said entitlement reform is a huge problem that needs a broader, bolder solution.

The federal government can't afford to keep all the promises that Democrats and Republicans have made over the years, he said.
