You all remember, I'm sure, the coal company that forced the miners to attend a Romney rally and lose a day's pay. That coal company has put up a big sign near the mine that says:
SAVE EASTERN OHIO
FIRE OBAMA
Just down the road a large homemade sign has appeared that says:
SAVE EASTERN OHIO
STOP AMERICAN ENERGY CORP
OBAMA
FOUR MORE YEARS

(1,151 posts)I live in eastern ohio, and I see 'stop the war on coal signs all over the place.Im sure its a koch industry that hates any kind of govt interference such as saftey regulations, and air pollution rergulations, etc. So they scream about taxes, and jobs. It frightens these simple Ohio folk. As much as they hate the bad old govt they believe everything they hear from the faux news and the rushpubicans religiously.
They think being conservative means its still 1950 in their minds. They just miss 1950 so bad, they want it to be 1950 again. There were no civil rights, or pollution. The word gay did not exist, no roe v wade. No MIC . We didnt have to wear seat belts, and we had tvs and beer and we lived until we died and that was that was the way it was.
Its the alternate reality they live in.

(3,503 posts)Wall mining techniques and automation have caused more unemployment in the coal mines than pesky environmental or OSHA regulations. One only has to look at the productivity numbers (tons of coal per miner) to see that.

(15,090 posts)We see those signs all over the place: Stop the war on coal. American Energy is almost certainly behind them--they were handing the signs out at the Century Mine. On the plus side, Obama has radio ads that details how much money has been spent on clean coal technology and how many more coal jobs there are in Ohio this year.

(23,973 posts)Purely an economic decision by power generating companies.
No matter who gets elected, less coal will be used to generate electricity in this nation going forward.
but there is a booming global demand for coal. whatever we dont burn we sell.

(15,090 posts)There's a huge demand for metallurgical coal right now, not so much for the lower quality.

(6,169 posts)My mom who still lives there always tells me about the dueling signs in her neighborhood every election. In 2004 one of her neighbors had a Bush sign, she had a Kerry sign, and her other neighbor had a 4x8 plywood sign with huge letters that said "Bush Sucks"!
Overall, it usually goes blue. It's steel country. USWA!!
