New York Jewish Week March 26, 2012
To the Editor:
Pamela Geller attempts to change the subject when it comes to her own vitriolic rhetoric against Muslims (Letters, March 23). But let's be clear: Geller should not be allowed to get away with playing the victim and hiding behind the mask of a "patriot and proud Zionist."
Geller's self-righteous campaign to show the world the "true face" of Islam is abhorrent and morally repugnant. Geller, in views she outlines in her blog, has linked Islam to bestiality and rape of minors, compared Muslims to Nazis and asserted that Islam inspired Hitler. The Anti-Defamation League has closely followed her anti-Muslim scapegoating and that of Stop Islamization of America, the organization she leads, and has posted additional examples of her comments on its website.
Terrorism inspired by fundamentalist Islam is indeed a true threat to America, Israel and democracies around the world. But in directing her rhetoric at the entire Islamic faith indeed, in supporting campaigns to suggest that Muslims should abandon their faith entirely Geller fuels and fosters anti-Muslim bigotry in society.
Sincerely,
Robert G. Sugarman
National Chair

(602 posts)And Pamela Gellers days of hiding behind the first amendment right of free speech might also be numbered. "Free speech", as in, free to produce repulsive communications and target those communications directly at specific religious/ethnic populations overseas, the goal being to provoke anger, resentment and revenge -- basically, to incite. We can continue to enjoy our current level of free speech in America without letting the Pamela Gellers stir up riot and mayhem around the world.

(25,699 posts)They're sort of like the gun nuts - suggest "hey, maybe there should be some considerations" and suddenly the crazies are on you like pitbulls at an Olive Garden, cursing you as an unamerican constitution-hater.
of course, talk about Occupy protests, or labor issues, or you know, other shit that involves free speech, they'll be nowhere to be found, but boy howdy, on this case, they're thicker than flies on shit.
And yes, i just used two different similes to say the same thing. I can do that.

(8,462 posts)If disliking some of the things that are done in the name of Islam, like murdering GLBT people, makes me an islamophobe, count me in! I'm a proud islamophobe in that case.
I'm also a christophobe, a judeophobe, a hinduphobe, a sikhophobe, a buddophobe, and a mormonophobe to boot, for many of the same reasons.
Is Pam Geller repugnant? Sure! She's horrible. She makes my skin crawl.
Want the government to make her shut up? Hell no! Let that asshole say all she wants. Guess what, the ADL gets to say all it wants about HER, too!
