I had that thrown back at me as a right wing talking point yesterday; from welfare to the presidency in 2 generations. As I understand it, the Congress alloted $100,000 to help relocate Mormons pushed out of Mexico. Were the Romneys destitute or just temporatily pressed for ready money? Google hasn't been much help with this.

(5,436 posts)That has to be the most desperate repig Talking Point yet. It's like a setup where the punchline is, "See? Welfare works!" If they want to then whine that too many people are dependent on it, just tell them "prove it", and then say, "Thanks for supporting the idea of welfare. Can I count on your vote for Democrats?"

Look up the Battleships Romney. I also heard (can't confirm) that one of the wife's family owned so much land in Brazil it was said they owned half of Brazil. So no, it's no rags to riches story.
