(15,954 posts)Even voting for one article for impeachment was not impressive. I never understood the applause for it. In the big picture, it meant nothing at least to me.

(4,846 posts)It's better for us to get a full democratic government and then find remedy to Trump's damage. It's not that I don't want to keep my hopes up. But I wouldn't bet anything on republican doing the right thing, listen to the public outcry, or follow their own previous rules.
My hope is better placed on getting democrats into office and then fix the Trump damages.

(6,477 posts)Why would anyone think that Republican Senators would give up this opportunity.
This fight happened in 2016. That's when we lost the fight. Now we're just living through that loss.
Special shout-out to the "Heighten the contradiction" idiots for whom Hillary Clinton wasn't good enough.

(19,264 posts)wouldn't do this were just trying to make themselves feel better.
Mitch will take the win today. Period. Whatever happens in the future happens in the future. Whatever threats. Whatever outrage. Whatever risk of alienating votes. Those are battles for tomorrow. He will take the win today.
That is how Moscow Mitch has ALWAYS worked. Always. Moscow Mitch screwed over Garland. He took the win that day over the risks in the future. It worked for him. It worked for him here again. Blocking all of Obama's legislation worked for him again. Moscow Mitch will ALWAYS take the immediate win and move the country to the right. He is very predictable.
It is only Democrats who do this long dance about we can't do X because then they "might" do Y and then <insert 30 paragraph explanation here> ... and see that would be bad for us in 20-30 years if everything worked out exactly like that. Republicans would just do X if they can and worry about the rest later.
If Puerto Rico was a deep red territory it would already be a state. The instant they had the votes in both chambers and a Republican President they would have made it happen. They would have done it and expanded their power and worried about the consequences later.

(4,965 posts)That needs to stay.
Also, from what I remember of the last vote, PR doesn't want to be a state. Or at least it isn't clear they want that.

(2,066 posts)We may get a few judges and thats all.
No legislation.
No expansion of healthcare.
No infrastructure bill.
No clean energy or aspects of the Green New Deal.
Nothing.
We need to kill the filibuster. Craft legislation and make the GOP suffer.

(4,965 posts)"We are going to vote on this thing."
"We are going to filibuster."
"Well, put the catheter in and get to talking. Hope you can make it the whole time."
Instead we just say, "OK, I guess we won't vote then." Fuck that. Actually filibuster if you want to block something.

(43,501 posts)The numbers are just not there. Murkowski and maybe, maybe concern troll Collins will be the only ones to vote against. Even if Kelly was a Senator NOW, that means they have the votes.

(19,264 posts)If Democrats have <60 votes in the Senate they will never pass a single item from Biden's agenda. Nothing. Public option - not a single Republican vote. Increase minimum wage - not a single Republican vote. Police reforms - not a single Republican vote. Raise taxes on the rich - not a single Republican vote.
If Biden wants to increase military spending or cut taxes for billionaires Republicans will "cross the aisle" for that. Otherwise they will block everything and then run on how the Democrats can't get anything done and retake the Senate and possibly the House.
If people give you power ..... USE IT.
