If things dont start looking better for Mitt Romney soon, theyre going to get a lot worse for him, and very quickly...Its become conventional wisdom that the Romney campaign has more money than the Obama campaign. But thats not quite right.
If you just compare the Romney and Obama campaigns, Obamas actually got a cash advantage. Up until August, the most recent month for which fundraising numbers are available, Obama raised $337 million to Romneys $194 million. Hes also got about $88 million on-hand, as compared to Romneys $50 million. Thats in part because Romney wasnt the clear nominee until a few months ago, leaving Republicans who wanted Obama out of office unsure where to put their money. Many of them sent that money to the Republican Party itself...The RNC has raised $189 million to the DNCs $111 million, though the joint Obama/DNC Victory Fund has raised $291 million to the Romney/RNCs $207 million, and, for technical reasons related to the number of small donors, more of that money is available to the Obama campaign than to the Romney campaign.
Romneys financial advantage only comes clear when you add in the Republican-affiliated super PACs. The major pro-Romney super PACs American Crossroads and Restore Our Future have raised more than $150 million, and are able to raise more seemingly at will. The major pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA has only raised $34 million.
But heres the catch: Romney only controls the money raised by his campaign. The money raised by the RNC is controlled by the RNC. The money raised by Karl Roves American Crossroads super PAC is controlled by Rove and his partners. And while these groups want Romney to be president, they are not solely devoted to the task of electing Romney as president. If they are devoted to anything, its to blocking Obama.

Mitt looks like he's having a meltdown.
Maybe it would help if he stopped throwing around money.
Romney Campaign spends same as Obama Campaign for HALF the staff.

(1,448 posts)to spend his money smarter than Pres. Obama, who has no business experience. Or, is Willard a fraud -- businessman who can only win by over-powering his opposition with huge amounts of cash?

(23,500 posts)They're gathering in newly set up offices in critical swing states. Some of the locations have a tinge of irony for a supposedly grassroots, ordinary citizens-led organization: In Saddlebrook, Arizona, they'll be meeting in a country club; in Clearwater, Florida, the local AFP field director rented space from an outsourcing company called TAC Worldwide. But the work the AFP machine is doing is no laughing matter for liberals. The Koch network has a sophisticated targeting system; as well as an army of experienced Republican campaign hands to guide the effort. The volunteers even receive Samsung Galaxy tablets to quickly log information and move on to the next potential Romney voter.
Its the beginning of an extremely well-planned get-out-the-vote effort that duplicates what an entire national party would attempt. And its been four years in the making.

(116,464 posts)this is a problem for the GOP in a Presidential election year. If Romney has no coattails, then that will impact candidates down-ticket.
There are Republicans already complaining.

(8,377 posts)Some of it is real cash, but a lot of it is "promised" and "pledged". And if I'm one of those big donors, I'm not very eager to dump more money into Romney now. I think I'd at least push back and say "Come on, big boy, time to put some of your own money up. I'll match you, but I'm not going to give you a free ride. After all, we don't want you to feel 'entitled', do we?"
I do think a lot of money could go down ticket, but that's a problem. Many people vote a straight ticket, so it they give up on Romney, they may lose 5-10% on the down-ticket races.

(492 posts)isn't campaigning harder. I think they bashed the Democrats too hastily and turned off swing voters. We all hear that jobs are increasing. We have seen the Presidents accomplishments in the middle east. Obama & Michelle connect with middle America very well. I think that Romney's biggest hurdle has always been his elitism. He feels like a cold ruthless rich man and nothing more. I also think people aren't comfortable with his religion. And then he's put his foot in his mouth so many times, it's laughable. His superpac is purely a democrat bashing machine. We still have no clue what the hell Romney thinks he'll do for us. He flat out refuses to share any details and his tax blunders precede him.
I love how Rush said "re-electing Obama will be the end of the Republican party."
I love how Ingraham said "If Obama wins, Shut down the Republican party."
I can't wait to hear what they have to say once Obama does in fact win re-election!
It's going to be a great day America!
