Some even want it broken up into three. But usually those people are also talking about first seceeding and becoming (or returning to) the Bear Flag Republic, then breaking it up into a different amount of states within it. With the exception of the few who are big into the US federal support given to military bases, which would go away if California or the Left Coast in general seceeded.

Then there's the seceeders that talk of the countries of Cascadia or Jefferson, depeding on how much of Oregon and Nevada they take with them.

But none of the old-timers seem to want to include Arizona in their little kingdoms on the coast. Sad for the Zonies that the only ones who might take them are this group of Tea-Party Loons, lead by someone who's aides are saying "is off on Vacation in Europe" at the time and can't lead thier little get-together.

our four seasons, redwoods and awesome wine, and for San Francisco. But they also love us for the water that, by fate of geography, comes from North to South. I get the LA secession a bit but they would probably sell San Diego to Mexico/Baja California to finance it. (sarcasm, just in case....)

Crazies, my ass. Every year we "look forward" to the population rush after the New Year's Day Rose Bowl with everyone in their short sleeves, sunglasses still squinting against the sun or to those who return after Leaving their Hearts in San Francisco.

And contrary to public opinion, most of us don't mind opening our state to Snowbirds or Immigrants...the illegal ones help keep your food bill down and their kids become loyal civic participants.

At least we're not Texas trying to secede. They had The Alamo, we had The Gold Rush!!! Blue and proud of it!!

That's sort of unfair lumping everyone down here up as haters of everything Norcal. And that extremely rude comment about San Diego makes YOU sound like the one with the regional problem.

Fresno County went for Barak Obama in 2008 and probably will again in 2012 as the Democrats are out-registering the Republicans by a significant margin.

Let's see, California consistently goes Democrat. Because of SOS Debra Bowen it's harder to steal elections here because of the elimination of the Diebold machines. How else can they turn CA around? Hmm.

No more than 6 Reps per 1 Senator. It's the only way to get past the chronic under-representation of large states in the Senate. It also gives us a chance for a "fresh start", incorporating all the latest ideas in government and democracy, each time a state splits. Either one state remains the "original" state and one becomes the "new" state, or they can both become a "new" state.

If we did it today, we'd go from 50 to 67 states immediately, but it would weaken the hold the small, conservative states (Wyoming, Kansas, the Dakotas, etc.) have in the Senate.

I think it's bogus that California's 2 senators represent 12% of the US population. At the same time, depending on how the state is split, that could give us two more democrats in the senate or two more republicans in the senate.

-----------

Just for chuckles, I took a look at how that would shake out.

San Diego and Imperial would be a state.

Riverside, San Bernardino, Inyo, and Mono would be a state. (I dunno how this would be economically viable, given that you can't have an economy based on borax.)

Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Kern, Kings, and Tulare would be a state.

Sacramento, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Madera, Merced, Fresno, Stanislaus, and San Joaquin would be a state. (And maybe Alpine?)

Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, San Francisco, San Benito, and Santa Clara would be a state.

Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, and Yolo would be a little small for a state.

Pretty much everything north of Sacramento, Tahoe, and San Francisco would be a state. (The politics of this state would be a nightmare. Rich liberals in Marin, hippies in the Emerald Triangle, and freepers inland. Chief exports would be timber, rice, wine, and weed.)

The LA/Orange county area is a mess and I didn't even try to break it down.

Some of these states would have serious economic problems, but some of them might be a lot better off than they are now.

which is honored to be the County Seat of the largest geographical representation of an Area Code ... 707 ... last they checked ... from the ocean just a tad short of the State Capital ... in the US...and Scenic Drives and vineyards and tourism and an interesting mix of political wackos and non-wackos. Where the hippies meet the yuppies and the farmers. And, we all seem to get along OK.

That would be Sonoma County...just north of the Marin Liberals.

Peace.

...so that the difference in representatives between the most-populous and least-populous new state would have to be no more than 1... in other works, break up the state pretty much evenly in terms of population. California has 53 reps, so you'd have 3 new states with 11 reps each, and 2 with 10 each.

The three states with 11 each would be on the verge of splitting, really, depending how how demographics go in the next couple of decades. By 2050, what is now California might be 7 or 8 states,
2 largish and 5 smallish! And represented by 14 Senators instead of 2. Much like how New England is about the size of Illinois but has 12 Senators.

Regarding California, I figured there would be three states centered on San Fransisco, Los Angeles, and San Diago, a 4th state taking up most of the coast between LA and SF, and then a larger, rural-ish state taking up most of the interior with maybe some coastline in a "finger" someplace. But, not being a native, I have no clue how Sacramento would draw up the map to be voted on.
