It was their 19th conversation, following 18 interviews that formed a key component of Woodward's book. Trump had privately told Woodward in February he knew critical details about how deadly the virus was, and in March admitted he was playing it down.
On August 14, Trump peppered the veteran two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist with questions about the book and what exactly was in it.
CNN has obtained excerpts of the 10-minute conversation, which show Trump was more focused on the economy than the public health crisis. As the two debated Trump's response to the pandemic, Trump finally asked: "So you think the virus totally supersedes the economy?"

(7,850 posts)Trump was so confident in his self proclaimed genius he assumed he could "own" Woodward as though Woodward was Trump's personal stenographer and not one of the guys who took down Nixon...Woodward played Trump and won...

(90,773 posts)needed to be done by scientists in the field of contagious diseases.
Trump, simply put, didn't want to do those things. Nationwide lockdowns, nationwide masks wearing, and social distancing.
He was more concerned about how he would look. If the economy took a hit, there goes his reelection chances.
(How could the economy not take a hit during a pandemic?)
Everything he should have done would have saved lives and made the economic hit a little less painful for the people.
But that would have required Trump and the GOP to actually give a fuck about people. To help the people in a time of need. Actually help them with sustained basic income and other necessities.
Trump wasn't going to do that and the GOP in Congress wasn't going to do that either.
As a nation, we should have come together - but Trump didn't want that. He wanted more and more division.
Trump allowed people to suffer and die deliberately.

(22,133 posts)by believing in a policy of the 'economy' over lives and a pandemic, they proved just how ignorant of science and facts they truly are.
I hope those that continue to vote for such ignorant people truly take a look at themselves and their voting, and truly answer if they are doing better today, being that a pandemic, that was made far worse than it should have been due to the grossly incompetent actions of the moron in the WH.
I think that this is why Biden constantly out polls trump in all of the polls, trump has lost a substantial number of people permanently w/ his actions regarding the CV. And trump's support will only continue to get worse and worse as the CV illnesses and deaths unfortunately continue to climb (a big chunk of the unbelievers are going to get hit w/ the CV, they are kind of asking for it).

(90,773 posts)They've convinced their voters that government is the enemy of progress and freedom.
Recall how all those people who were chanting for the government to get out of their social security?
That pretty much sums them all up.

(22,133 posts)course have any replacement bill waiting in the sidelines. They demand lesser government but of course don't have an answer to what to replace the lesser government with. They demand that SS be canceled or eliminated, but of course don't have an answer to what to replace it with, if at all. For people that only have put out one bill of any worth (to the 1%ers of course, not us), the 2017 tax cut and jobs (yeah, right) bill in the last four years, they sure put out a lot of hot air and nothing else.
Sounds kind like what the 1%ers want, to get their reduced taxes while we all fight in the background, and nothing is getting done, in effect, the republicans are deliberately muddling the waters, not passing a damn thing, etc. so the 1%ers will continue to get their money, the government bills keep getting bigger and bigger, and we're the ones getting stuck w/ the bills.

(7,850 posts)never "it's the economy, stupid"...this election was always a referendum on Trump..his criminality, the crime "family" surrounding and enabling him, his fascism, our diminishing stature as a country, our increasing isolationism, the in-your-face racism, ethnic and gender hate and Trump's thirst for revenge...

(82,849 posts)For decades Republicans have adopted as an article of political faith that the government is a drain on society, and utterly useless to do anything about anything. If the government had stepped up and provided leadership in the pandemic, slowing or stopping its spread, and providing a financial backstop to local governments, Republicans would have been in the untenable position of demonstrating just what government can do, particularly in a situation that doesn't present a profit center. The only value to be gained is keeping people healthy, and capitalists can't spend your health. So, tens of thousands of Americans must die to preserve the Republican creed. Sucks to be you, but Republicans simply can not be seen using government for the benefit of the people.

(24,504 posts)Probably have sewed up his re-election if he had followed science and painted himself as a true leader. Instead, he thought he could outwit the virus and politicize it as a Democratic hoax. Being the sleazebag that he is, he chose the low road and delivered to himself what I believe will be a resounding loss in November.
