Please Get the Word out if Voter ID Is Not Needed in Your State!

This weekend, as I was talking to neighbors in my Saint Paul, MN precinct about the election, several people mentioned that they would have to bring photo ID to the polling place. Given all the publicity about Voter ID laws, a lot of people apparently think it is already a requirement in Minnesota. They were surprised to hear that no photo ID was required. Some didn't want to believe me.

Since the Voter ID amendment is on the ballot in the 2012 General Election, some people have gotten the idea that it's required for this election. I think that may be true in other states where no such ID is needed to vote, as well. If so, the publicity alone could lower voter turnout. I encourage everyone who is involved in GOTV efforts to make sure that voters understand the particular situation in their own state.

I've added a new post in my precinct's blog explaining that photo ID is not not required in Minnesota and encouraging voters to vote against the amendment. There's a link to the blog in the signature line below. If any of that information is useful to you, you're welcome to use it. If you're doing GOTV work for this election, accurate info on voting requirements is important, wherever you are.
