Gallup: Half of political independents are in poverty

Gallup finds that 50 percent of Americans who consider themselves politically independent are in poverty — a far higher percentage than those who identify as Democrats or Republicans:

2. A psychological investment in politics--

or, for that matter, anything not involving survival on a daily basis--is a luxury that many of the poor can't afford. Face it--it's pretty hard to see a connection between your single little vote and any significant changes in your living status. It's related to the learned helplessness/hopelessness that are so (justifiably) endemic among the poor.
