(86,743 posts)The Santa Ana is blowing so all the smoke east of you is blowing through your area out to the ocean. Stay safe!

(86,743 posts)So don't call them Santa Ana winds, they are still blowing east to west and that's why SFO is smoked out.

(86,743 posts)All the times I lived in California was in San Diego County so I didn't know the winds aren't called that up north!

(36,456 posts)There's a river of smoke shooting down the Sacramento Valley from the Butte / Tehama / Glenn Lightning Complex fires, aimed straight at the Bay Area.

(86,743 posts)I actually knew it was called the Diablo but it seems to have not been in my consciousness for years, until you just reminded me!
And I saw that on that satellite loop earlier today. We get similar winds here but it's often referred t as the Chinook.
When it's driving fires and smoke like that, it's horrible and surreal. We haven't had many fires in the Northern Rockies all summer, until about two weeks ago. Now that our September rain has passed through, we'll be back to inferno status in a few days.

Here's about all you need to know about offshore winds, and it's arguably the best opening paragraph in ANY piece of literature, bar none:
There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge. - Raymond Chandler, Red Wind: A Collection of Short Stories

(10,145 posts)up in these parts - SF Bay Area - and aren't unusual for this time of year. It's part of the reason why September/October tend to be our hot times - and one of the main reasons the Oakland hills fire of 1991 was so deadly.

(10,145 posts)I woke up, looked at the light coming in through the cracks in the curtains and it seemed like it was just before sunrise, so I went back to sleep. It seems to be a very high smoke layer, since it doesn't smell smoky outside. It also seems to be an offshore flow, so we're getting the smoke from all the fires to the east. At least the heat wave is gone - for a while.

(90,769 posts)Fingers crossed for the Central Coast Ventura and Santa Barbara. Things cooled yesterday (After hitting 107 over the weekend), but I kept the windows shut as the gray overcast didnt feel like fog, and the sunlight stripes on the concrete looked yellow. Finally opened up when I could tell we were getting real coastal fog last night.
This morning I was all set to shut the house up again because of that same yellow look, then decided to check the Air Quality Control pages, which gave me some assurance for our area. I think the color of the sunlight is from ash very high up in the atmosphere, then.
You and all our friends in the fire zones are much in our thoughts, Yui.
