An ACLU Kentucky communications associate criticized Transylvania University on Saturday for accepting Nick Sandmann, the high school student who sued major news outlets for their coverage of a controversial interaction he and several of his classmates had with a Native American activist.
Does anyone else think its a bit of a stain on Transylvania University for accepting Nick Sandman [sic]? Im sure its a both sides defense, but its pretty counter to their mission and another instance of there not actually being equal sides to an issue, ACLUs Samuel Crankshaw said in a Facebook post first uncovered by Jonathan Turley.
I think TU should accept anyone willing to have an open mind and engage in debate, regardless of their views. Thats how we all learn, he continued. But this kid clearly is a provocateur in training with no intention of learning. He exists only to troll, intimidate and play victim.
An assistant professor and diversity scholar at the university, Dr. Avery Tompkins, commented on the post calling Sandmanns public behavior and rhetoric atrocious and uninformed and saying he would closely monitor Sandmann at the school.

Does the university's admissions have a douchebag quota it has to meet?

(25,998 posts)Transylvania means across the woods in Latin. The school was founded in what was at the time a heavily forested region of western Virginia (later Kentucky).

"Across the woods" describes it perfectly.

(10,014 posts)It's unfortunate that KY ACLU has let Samuel Crankshaw, a Communications Associate, who doesn't understand free speech represent the organization to the media on various issues since he was hired in 2019. He now has a disclaimer on his facebook page that his comments are his own but the comments are brutal.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sandmann sued the ACLU over this.

(25,925 posts)I don't Sandmann will go after the ACLU. Crankshaw seems to just be speaking for himself. In fact, the ACLU might step in and call out Dr. Avery Tompkins for suggesting that he would closely monitor Sandmann at the school. That's some McCarthyite shit there. Just the kind of thing that the ACLU tends to be critical of.
