Not many news stories that get any attention in Washington happen here in the American Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands where I have been living for the past year and half and most stories that do come out of here are not very flattering - but this one is very sweet and touchingDora G. Camacho smiles last Thursday next to a framed photo received from President Obama along with a letter of encouragement. The eight-year-old was paralyzed five-months ago due to a mystery infection and is currently on a ventilator at the Commonwealth Health Center.
PRESIDENT Obama may be in the middle of a fiercely fought election campaign but news of a young NMI patient has reached his office and his response was immediate.
A letter and family photo from Obama arrived last Thursday for Dora Grace Camacho and now enjoys a place of honor over her hospital bedside.
For a fearless, paralyzed 8-year- old hospitalized for months in the Commonwealth Health Center, the president is part of a growing wave of supporters hailing her courage and inspiration.
Dear Dora, I recently learned about the challenges you face, and I want you to know how much I admire your strength at this difficult time, stated Obama in the letter dated Sept. 12. The courage you have in the face of these challenges is inspiring and I hope the love and support of your family and friends comfort you each day. Please know the First Lady and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, Obama stated in the letter written on presidential stationery.
Doras mother, Jennifer-Gerald Ada Sablan, said she was in shock when Dora mouthed she got a letter from the president. She understood it was a very big deal and knew again how important she is to everyone.
