Eric Burdon on Trump Using 'House of the Rising Sun'

'A Tale of Sin and Misery Set in a Brothel Suits Him So Perfectly’

Eric Burdon of the Animals is the latest artist to take issue with Donald Trump using their music without permission for campaign purposes.

On Wednesday, the Animals’ classic “House of the Rising Sun” played over the speakers at a Wilmington, North Carolina airport as Air Force One taxied down the runway en route to an appearance there. Video of the scene with the song’s usage was later disseminated on social media. The 1964 single had also been played at previous Trump rallies.

Burdon responded to Trump’s use of “House of the Rising Sun” in a pointed statement where the singer both criticized the president and threw his support behind the Biden/Harris ticket.

“Even though nobody asked my permission, I wasn’t surprised to learn that #Trump #864511320 used #Houseof theRisingSun for his rally the other day,” Burdon said in a statement. “A tale of sin and misery set in a brothel suits him so perfectly! Far more appropriate for this time in our history might be.”

'House of the Rising Sun' is a folk song actually but Eric Burdon's version I guess would be copyrighted.

"House of the Rising Sun" is, indeed, "a tale of sin and misery set in a brothel," so it fits Trump, but why would anyone with two functioning brain cells to rub together choose it as a campaign anthem?

"Oh, Mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done.
Don't spend your life in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun."

Then there's Neil Young and "Rockin' in the Free World," over whose unauthorized use Young is suing Trump; obviously nobody listened to those lyrics either. And many more: https://www.vulture.com/article/the-history-of-musicians-rejecting-donald-trump.html

I'm suddenly reminded of Reagan using "Born in the USA", because they only heard the hook. Lee Atwater, a pretty good guitarist, pointed out what the verses were saying. It didn't last too long on the campaign trail.

and copy right infringement. Evidently he is above the law and can steal music and lyrics from the original artists whenever he wants to because he's like the king, you know.

But this version of "For what it's worth", by Del McCoury and Friends, recorded in Ricky Skaggs home studio is A)Achingly beautiful B)Amazingly prophetic "There's a man with a gun, over there, tellin`me, I got to beware!" C) shows you can make incredible music without AutoTune

a large fee when the guitarist he was hot for wouldn’t sleep with him.

The band had no money and had to reshoot the scenes. They slapped a Trumpish wig on a guy and showed the guy as a big assh0le.
