VA-07: REMINDER: Nick Freitas Voted Against Our Children's Safety

Nick Freitas is out with the latest installment of his podcast and let’s just say…it’s a doozy. Freitas may want you to believe he has your child’s best interests in mind, but his record tells a different story.

While Virginia parents worry about their children’s health and well-being during a global pandemic, Nick Freitas is attempting to run for office on a toxic record of putting our children in danger — including voting against bipartisan legislation designed to keep children safe while at daycare.

After the traumatic and preventable deaths of two children at their daycare providers in 2015, Virginia legislators passed bipartisan legislation to require fingerprint background checks for licensed day care providers, but exempted religious organizations and small daycares operated out of family homes. The compromise also included a 2017 deadline to end the exemption or lose out on $6 million in federal funding put in place to protect Virginia families.

But when the bill came up again in 2017, Freitas was one of just 21 legislators to vote against it — putting children’s lives at risk and $6 million in federal funding on the line.

“No parent should ever have to worry about their child dying at daycare. During a global pandemic, we need a voice in Congress who will put our children’s lives first,” said DCCC Spokesperson Christine Bennett. “And while Nick Freitas has consistently endangered the health and safety of Virginians, it’s unconscionable and unforgivable to vote against a bill that all sides fought for to keep young children safe and avoid more needless deaths. In 2018, this district rejected the extreme partisan obstructionist values that Nick Freitas represents, and 2020 will be no different.”
