The Disaster Campaign Of Calamity Bain!

1. Noonan: Romney campaign is a "rolling calamity"

September 21, 2012
by Stephanie Condon

Peggy Noonan, the Wall Street Journal columnist and former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, hasn't been shy about voicing her concerns about Mitt Romney's campaign, but in a Friday column she stepped up her critique.

"The Romney campaign has to get turned around," she wrote. "This week I called it incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant 'rolling calamity.'"

Noonan is one of several conservative pundits who in recent weeks have spoken out about the Romney campaign's perceived missteps, such as its response to the crisis in Libya and the lack of policy details put forth.

2. Another day, another Romney disaster

September 18, 2012
by Doug Thompson

From the beginning, political professionals feared Mitt Romney would be a disaster as a candidate for President.

Their fears have become reality, sources within the Republican Party tell Capitol Hill Blue, and party officials fret daily over a one-time election opportunity they see vanishing rapidly.

“God, this guy is a loser,” says one long-time GOP strategist who — for obvious reasons — asked not to be identified. “We just lurch from one disaster from another.”

Romney’s latest debacle is a hidden-camera video shot at a fundraiser which caught the GOP Presidential candidate calling supporters of President Barack Obama “victims” who are dependent on government handouts.

3. Romney's Libya Diatribe a Disaster

September 17, 2012
by TarantinoDork

Pew Research Center: Public disapproves Romney comments on latest situation in Mideast by 48% to 26%.

And this is the only appropriate response to Mitt Romney's galling political attack. When the attack was ongoing, a joint US-Libyan rescue mission was underway, and our ambassador was still missing....Mitt Romney chose this moment to launch a partisan attack, directly accusing the President of sympathizing with the terrorists responsible.

Then the morning comes, he holds a press conference before the President has even had a chance to comment on the tragedy, doubles down on his political attack and smirks his way off the stage.

Simply. Not. Ready.

The response from the government and people of Libya has been infinitely more magnanimous, constructive, and consoling than anything we've seen from the Republican Presidential Campaign.

Mitt Romney’s Orgy of Creative Self-Destruction

God preserve you if you have any idea what's happening inside Mitt Romney's brain. After a week that was already the worst of his campaign, it's as if the man said, "Oh, yeah? Watch this," and pulled back the hyperdumb levers of his magical farting machine, the Mittlennium Fuckup.

The Romney campaign not only appears determined to go nowhere but to do it as quickly as possible. It is the fastest hunk of junk in the political galaxy. All Romney had to do was withhold information, as was his wont for almost everything else during the campaign, and he'd have been fine. His plan on Iran or Afghanistan? Just you wait until after the election. How he'd close the over $10 trillion hole in his budget by via ending tax loopholes? Just you wait. Repeal and replace Obamacare? With what??? Just you wait.

But his tax returns—the things most non-wonks had forgotten about—well, we needed a steaming heap of those to change the narrative of his steaming heap of a week. On Friday, we got them.

Unless he faced a dubious leak from Anonymous or some political reincarnation of Nixon's plumbers, Romney could have foreseen no guaranteed upside to this release. The time to cough up the tax returns passed after the GOP debates and real primary contest ended.

Romney Campaign Imploding?

September 18, 2012
by Stewart Acuff

I have never seen such a shoddy Republican general election as the one we are seeing in the Romney Ryan presidential campaign.

I always remember Republican presidential campaigns being run by skilled, seasoned professionals who rarely made mistakes

But this is the campaign that put a Clint Eastwood cadaver with dementia on stage with an empty chair. This is a Republican campaign that allowed Romney to criticize the President in the middle of the night during a crisis for American diplomats.

Is Romney this dumb, or this unprepared, or this tone deaf? What about his staff?

Let's be clear. This election is ours to win. There is no excuse for us to not win this one.

Don’t Say “Desperate”

September 14, 2012
by John Heilemann

But the right reacted almost as harshly—with former aides to John McCain, George W. Bush, and Ronald Reagan creating an on-the-record chorus of disapproval, while countless other Republican officials and operatives chimed in anonymously. “This is worse than a Lehman moment,” says a senior GOP operative. “McCain made mistakes of impulsiveness, but this was a deliberate and premeditated move, and it totally revealed Romney’s character; it revealed him as completely craven and his candidacy as serving no higher purpose than his ambition.”

“Romney is in a very bad place,” says another senior Republican strategist. “He’s got the Republican intelligentsia second-guessing him, publicly and privately. The party base has never trusted him and thinks that everything bad it ever thought about him is being borne out now. And he’s got the media believing that he can’t win. He’s right on the edge of a self-fulfilling downward spiral.”

Whether Romney can resist that spiral in the two weeks between now and the first presidential debate is an open question—but there’s no doubt that the pressure on him to win that debate decisively is now almost overwhelming. “If he doesn’t, you’ll see the whole thing start to unravel pretty quickly, à la Dole in 1996,” says a third GOP strategist, arguing that Romney’s fund-raising will dry up and the expected flood of money from conservative super-pacs will be reduced to a trickle.
