I raised my right hand on 17MAR63 and said these words:
I, [name], do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.
And when I lowered my hand I was a second lieutenant.
I never saw combat. I lucked out.
But in swearing that oath I wrote a check to my country in the amount of 'my life'.
Every man and woman who ever served in our nation's military signed that same check.
And we're all just suckers and losers.

(23,322 posts)I dont have any veterans in my family and dont know any veterans personally and I am just sick to my stomach today. This has taken my breath away. Anyone who has taken that oath...to give their life for their country if asked...is a hero to me and I believe, to everyone here on this message board. Thank you for taking the oath. 🙏

(2,073 posts)You are everything he is not. You are unselfish, patriotic and a hero.
Fuck him, and if people continue to support him even after he has shown himself who he is time and time again, fuck them too.

(5,315 posts)But like a sucker I enlisted anyway and signed up for an extra year so I could choose my job and where I would serve. I never left the country during my service time and looking back on it I'm glad I served my time.I don't consider myself a sucker.

But I've read soldiers various accounts WW2 Vietnam, and closer to our times over decades.
Have a pretty long time Gen X friend who served.
It infuriates me the disgrace he's showing the Armed Forces.
