As much as we might want it, there is a reason why military officers are prohibited from "coming out ". Civilians tell them what to do and they obey. They are not supposed to be a PAC that comes out every 4 years and throws their support behind a candidate. If they want to "fall on their sword " that is their choice. But all in all I'd rather they stay out of it.

Look, people who are no longer in the chain of command should be able to say what ever they want. But the point is that no one person can influence the people under his command for their political beliefs.
