Rescue dog detects pulse in rubble a month after Beirut port blast

Beirut: Rescue workers have detected signs of life in the rubble of a building in a residential area of Beirut, Lebanon, that collapsed after a huge August 4 explosion at a nearby port, rescue workers said.

Eddy Bitar was speaking after the state news agency reported a team with a rescue dog had detected movement under a destroyed building in the Gemmayze area, one of the worst hit by the blast.

The sniffer dog with a Chilean rescue crew responded to the presence of a person in the rubble.

"These [signs of breathing and pulse] along with the temperature sensor means there is a possibility of life," Bitar said at the scene.

As noted, they would have to have access to water somehow.

I do Search and Rescue for FEMA and we don't really see anything beyond 10-14 days as possible without very fortunate conditions.

In Haiti, we pulled 5 people out of a grocery store. Several of them were fortunate enough to be trapped on the peanut butter and jelly aisle. Crazy things happen.

But I would be really shocked if this turned into a live rescue.

Godspeed to them.
