(8,377 posts)He is going to "go back and get" that money no matter what happens in the election. If he loses, he'll amend his return in November, 2012. If he were somehow to win, he would still amend his return, but he would find a convenient time to do that, when it isn't likely to come up again. He has until April 14, 2015 to "go back and get" that money.
And guess what, it is confidential information, so nobody would ever know. If asked, he will simply say, "I provided an extensive disclosure of my finances -- 20 years worth -- during the campaign. That is much more than required by law and I will not discuss that subject any further."

(3,585 posts)Releasing multiple years -- in full -- is not a "legal requirement" despite the fact that Ann Romney said last month "we've released what is legally required." It is a tradition, followed by all presidential candidates in the last 40+ years... one begun by his father.
And sure, even if he should win (God forbid), he could amend his return and take the full deduction.

(8,377 posts)It is highly disingenuous of Romney:
a) to artificially manipulate his taxes in order to match his bogus claims
b) to act like he doesn't plan to get the money back as soon as the cameras point somewhere else.
