Nancy Pelosi is one of the -- if not the -- smartest political strategists in the Democratic Party. As such, she knows that appearances matter in politics. A lot. Which is why her decision to have her hair done indoors at a shop in San Francisco makes so little sense.
In security footage obtained by Fox News, Pelosi is shown inside the salon without a mask. Fox also reported that the owner of the salon, Erica Kious, was angry that Pelosi had been allowed to violate the rules put in place during the coronavirus pandemic that mandates haircuts can only be given outside. Kious said it was "a slap in the face that she went in, you know, that she feels that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can't work.

The owner dosen't mention telling the stylist that the changes to restrictions announced Friday did not apply to them. If the owner knew this was not allowed by city law why did she let the stylist do it anyway?

From the story I read, the stylist claims the salon owner had violated health rules back in April and did not like Pelosi's politics. In addition:
Ms. Kious took special interest in the appointment during this telephone call, wherein she made several vitriolic and incendiary comments about Speaker Pelosi and her purported responsibility for temporarily suspending operations of Ms. Kious business, said the letter from attorney Matthew Soleimanpour, who is based in La Jolla...
Keep in mind the salon owner and the stylist are two different people.

(94,698 posts)In 2014, after returning from Liberia, where she was in contact with a freelance cameraman who contracted Ebola, Snyderman and the remainder of her crew were asked to observe a voluntary 21-day quarantine to minimize the risk of further outbreak. After Snyderman was then seen inside a car, outside a local restaurant, in violation of the quarantine, the state of New Jersey issued a mandatory 21-day quarantine for Snyderman and her crew.
On March 12, 2015, Snyderman announced she had resigned her position as NBC's Chief Medical Editor due to the controversy over her breaking the quarantine.

COVID is a threat - it makes absolutely no difference that there was only one customer at a time. Mask off is mask off. The aerosolized droplets will be hanging out in the salong - whether there is one customer or several. It was a stupid decision by Pelosi to make her hair a priority over public health.

As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is next in line to the POTUS, and she gets an equivalent federal security detail, iirc. What do you want to bet her security guys said it probably would not be all that safe for her to have her hair done in the parking lot, sidewalk, or other outdoor location? That certainly might have had something to do with it being indoors.

Rep Pelosi's stylist was not available, so the stylist referred her to someone else.
The referral stylist rents a chair at the salon in question. S/He doesn't own it.
Over the past weekend, it was all over local news that salons in the area could offer indoor services as of 8/31. Only three counties were still on outdoor services only as of 8/31. Unfortunately, it seems like the stylist didn't know that SF County was one of those three counties.
The stylist does not have a key to the salon, so s/he called the owner to ask for access on 8/31.
The owner, instead of telling the stylist that SF County still required that salons refrain from indoor services as of 8/31, asked the stylist who the client was.
(I'm guessing if it were the likes of Danielle Steel, or Marissa Mayer, the Monday appt would have been just fine with a nod and a wink from the owner.)
And since the owner is a Trumpette, she decided that her personal reputation in San Francisco didn't mean as much to her as a chance to be Fox Famous For Five Hot Minutes.
In closing, I'm betting the salon owner is probably getting ready to close her SF salon, and figures that her despicable actions will help her business where she actually lives - Fresno.

Pelosi is a grown-up and a lawmaker. She has a responsibility to understand whehter what she is doing is (1) safe and (2) legal.
Would we excuse this behavior by Ivanka - or be troubled by the fact that it seems to be a setup? If not, we should not be excusing it for Pelosi.

(63,221 posts)Whatever Nancy did, this is NOTHING compared to the massive crimes that the republicans have commited since they since they have been in power. NOTHING!
FUCK THEM! This is just another disgusting distraction from their crimes and I am sickened by those of you who are falling for this crap. I don't care what she did, honestly. I care about what they have done and are doing now which are the really important things we need to be focusing on. Not this petty, ridiculous bullshit!
Why the hell are so many willing to turn on our own and give them a pass every single time? It's sickening. Don't even give this shit the time of day. It's an absolute joke.

(34,086 posts)A quick scan of the threads suggests few would. A single standard applies - if it is wrong/a public health threat - so be it. We should be taking responsibilities for our mistakes, not screaming "setup

(63,221 posts)Whose side are you on anyway? She was set up and the right wing media ran with it. And that is who you choose to believe? SAD!
Ms. Toad
(34,086 posts)Further there is no "believe" about it - it is fact. She was in a salon, with someone she is not living or bubbled with, without a mask, in close enough contact for that person to wash her hair. Unless they are superhuman, that puts her closer than 6 ft away (and in my experience, between 1 and 2 feet).
I am taking significant personal risks to teach in person. I currently have at least one (potentially 6) students who were in my classroom within 48 hours before they were sent home because they have enough primary or secondary symptoms to require a 10-day quarantine. There is also a person in the building who has tested positive (now home, but we were in the building at the same time). Because of this potential exposure, I am not currently sharing a room or bed overnight with my spouse. I refused to hug my 88 year old parents over the weekend, while we were celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary, to ensure that I did not inadvertently expose them, because my risk of exposure is higher than it ordinarily is.
It makes no difference to my life if those 7 potential exposures acquired COVID 19 because they were blatantly flaunting the rules - or - because they got snookered by a political opponent into being caught on camera doing something stupid. If you are in close enough contact for someone you are not living or bubbled with to shampoo your hair, you should both be wearing masks. Period. Rule or no rule. Whether you are caught doing it or not.

(63,221 posts)My problem is with the media making this into a Federal case. What she did was inappropriate and unacceptable for someone of her stature, particularly.
What angers me is that that the media is elevating this into a crime that compares to the many crimes that Trump and company have committed, which is complete bullshit. This is a nothingburger. It should not even be in the news. What should be in the news are the many crimes being committed by Trump and the republicans DAILY.
I am so sick of the media going so hard on our people while they allow the most egregious crimes and offenses committed by republicans just go by without mention. It's disgusting and I don't really give a flying fuck what our people do because it will never, ever be half as bad as what they are doing to this country.
