While in California, Romney says Obama wants to make America "become California".

Romney, at his fundraiser near San Diego, said Obama was "taking Americans on a course that is extremely foreign to us."

"One would suggest that government knows better than free people," he said. "It's a pathway to become like Europe, and Europe doesn't work there. It's never going to work here. It's even possible we could be on a pathway to become California - I don't want that either."

If he had said Detroit, everyone would immediately recognize the "dog whistle". Indeed, that is why the GOP no longer uses Detroit (they commonly did at one time). It is just too obvious.

Does he think that hispanics are stupid?

He has lost California anyway so he probably didn't think of it as a political risk. The problem is that there is always political risk.

Another thing.

Why is the GOP message always one of division? Division by class. Division by color. Division by religion. Division by state.

How often can you offend various groups and retain long term viability? Are there enough angry old white men to do this?

Then we voted for Clinton and all of the sudden we were called "The Left Coast" and our 55 Electoral Votes have been written off for all time and we are described as the worse place you could possibly want to be in the entire nation because we want clean cars and enjoy sex.

....was only the PR Department of the US Government. They HATED George Herbert Walker Bush because he had the nerve to think that he was in charge. They absolutely HATED Clinton because he WAS in charge and they LOVED George W Bush because it didn't even occur to him that he could be in charge.

After his aircraft carrier landing he said he was happy they let him do that. I thought at the time, "WTF??? You are the one that's supposed to be running the show! You had to get PERMISSION??" Then I found out soon after the idiot wanted to have a grand parade through Washington with thousands of troops in dress uniforms holding flags with jets flying overhead and they wouldn't let him do that.

Republicans want a PR guy that will sell America unpopular policies disguised as something America wants.

Listen to this as an example:

idiot is still at it.

Romney raised $6 million at the Saturday evening event that attracted celebrities Dennis Miller and Gary Sinise. Before a group of more than 1,000 California Republicans, Romney kept up his criticism of the president for fostering what Romney said was a culture of dependency.

"This is a tough time. These are our brothers and sisters. These are not statistics. These are people," Romney declared. "The president's policies - these big-government, big-tax monolithic policies - are not working."

We understand that you and the 1% wouldn't want the US to resemble Europe and its equitable income distribution and strong unions.

You can repeat as often as you want that Europe doesn't work. It has its problems but it 'works' better than the US and other developed countries.

This paints California in a negative light as a place of low morality.

Because, as you know,...morality is all about sex.

You can bomb the shit out of a country for oil and that has nothing to do with morality,...that's business.

Remember, he's not interested in the rest of us.

I live in southern California and know lots of conservatives, and believe me, they hate California. (Kind of like the way they live in the US but hate half of Americans.) I want to tell them to get the hell out then, but I'm usually too polite. They're always grumbling and groaning about the high taxes here and the way California has such an "anti-business climate" with all the regulations and such. Oh and don't even start them on illegal immigration. Still, I don't see them going anywhere. They seem happy enough to stay.

Personally, I love California.

Screw you, Mitt. I thought I smelled something like sulfur in the air the other day.

87. I know some like that too here in Orange County.

Especially in Tustin, Costa Mesa and Anaheim Hills. The ones in Irvine are some of the worse. They share a border with Santa Ana and they act like everything east of the freeway is "The Barrio" and act like anyone that isn't a well scrubbed lily white is there to steal. They drive SUVs like they are sports cars and BELIEVE they OWN the road because their taxes paid for it. The Mercedes Benz is known locally as "The Newport Nova" because they're so common. A lot of older ones end up being driven by people who work at low paying jobs. I know a guy who has one that currently works at a car wash. This is because the rich here look at each others cars as a status symbol. Having one even three years old is considered to be sign that you aren't making much and it's ALL about flaunting your wealth so the poor people end up with their "hand me downs". You should see the rich strut at Fashion Island. If you want to REALLY see the rich you go to the Beverly Center in LA. Last time I was there I saw two 9 foot ceramic storks selling for $45,000,...each.

You know that expression, "Keeping up with the Joneses"? These guys are trying to keep up with the Rockefellers. They feel it's their DUTY to let New York know the West Coast is as rich and as cultured as they are.

I'm the one that came up with this gem when I was on ATJ: "Q: How do you attract an Orange County Girl? A: Stuff a sock in your wallet"

They are anti-government and yet if it weren't for government they wouldn't have a job.

These idiots don't even consider the Judge to be "government". To them, "government" is the guy on the other side of the aisle who is suing their client for some silly reason. Like who cares if the factory dumped 400 gallons of acetone? Besides, They cleaned it up by hosing it down the storm drain....

I have visited California any number of times. Two of my brothers and one of my sisters have lived there. It's a perfectly nice state. Now, personally, I have no desire to live there, but that's just me. However, other than high housing costs in too many parts, and a population density in parts that I wouldn't want to be in, there's nothing that terrible about the state.

I like to say that we have fifty wonderful states in this great country of ours. Every time I think about the ones I say you couldn't pay me to live there, I'll come across someone who truly LOVES that state. And I just get reminded all over again about how we're all different.

About the only thing wrong with the whole country "becoming California" might be that it would be a little boring, but then that state has quite a lot of diversity of everything, so I'm probably wrong there.

As a longtime lurker, I have never gotten so irritated as I did reading Romney's slam on my state. My state has world class colleges(I go to one) and everything you could ever want to close by. Mountains, sun, oceans, parks. We pay dearly for these things but we are far from knocked to the canvas, and if Cali is so awful, why did you move here you fuckhead?

It's turning out Romney's not that smart. How do you say something like that when you're courting voters in California? He also just asked aloud about the fire on Ann's plane and her not being able to get fresh air, "why don't they make it so the windows open on airliners (he actually used the word aircraft). What a moron. W may be smarter.

Yeah, he seems too clueless about too many things. Like where has he been living to not know his California remark was an insult, and that the last thing you want to do on a pressurized plane going 500 mph is to open a window. We can let him near the White House or the nuclear trigger. God! The man is scary.

But go ahead Romney - if you want to antagonize the state with the most electoral votes in America, why should anyone try to stop you?
