Sunday Talk Shows. Interviews with Pres. Obama and Bill Clinton

CBS Face the Nation
Pres. Clinton on "Face the Nation"
This Sunday I'm sitting down with President Bill Clinton in New York City. I'm really looking forward to getting his take on the wild few weeks out there on the campaign trail - and the state of the country overall.

He's been out there on the campaign trail a bit himself, but next week his focus is on the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City. Both President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will speak at the event, which is a conference that brings together world leaders in government, business, education and technology to work together in addressing global issues. While getting ready for Sunday's interview I've thought a bit about an interview I did with him in 1997, just a few months after his second inauguration. He was preparing for another big summit he'd put together - one in Philadelphia with former presidents George Bush and Jimmy Carter, Vice President Al Gore and retired Gen. Colin Powell. The focus of the summit was volunteering. Of course, that didn't stop us from talking a lot of politics during the interview.

Looking back at that interview, it's pretty incredible that some of the things we talked about are the same battles being fought today. Listen to this, he told me "I have made it clear publicly that we're prepared to meet the Republicans more than halfway on trying to save the Medicare program and lengthen the life of the Medicare Trust Fund." Sound familiar?

Then we talked about Social Security.

And we discussed how you get anything done in Congress. He told me that what he and both parties in Congress had done with the Chemical Weapons Convention "offers a road map of the kind of bipartisan progress what will prepare this country for the 21st century."

Maybe on Sunday he'll refresh our memories about that road map for getting things done in Congress. And maybe we'll see if he has any advice for this Congress about getting things done.

After I sit down with the president, we've got a terrific panel lined up to examine the latest news from the campaign trail and share their take on where this thing is headed. Mother Jones' David Corn, who discovered the Romney "47 percent" video that's giving his campaign a lot of trouble will join me. The Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan had some strong words for the Romney campaign this week, she wrote "It's time to admit the Romney campaign is an incompetent one. It's not big, it's not brave, it's not thoughtfully tackling great issues--" she'll also be with us. TIME Magazine's Managing Editor Richard Stengel, who wrote the magazine's cover story on Clinton this week, former Clinton adviser and Harvard University Professor David Gergen and CBS News' John Dickerson will offer their takes, too.

CBS 60 Minutes
NOTE NEW TIME: A special hour focusing on the two men running for president of the U.S. to be broadcast Sunday, Sept. 23 at 7:30-8:30 p.m. ET and 7:00-8:00 p.m. PT

Campaign 2012 - In separate interviews and for the whole hour, the president and his challenger will answer questions on the topics of critical interest to America's voters, including the economy and jobs, healthcare, national security and the federal budget. Scott Pelley interviews Governor Mitt Romney. Steve Kroft interviews President Barack Obama.

Meet The Press
This Sunday: The conversation shifts back to the Economy. Both campaigns are honing in this week on two videos that are fueling the debate about the role of government, taxes, and entitlement reform. Joining us for a debate: Obama backer Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) and key Romney supporter Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH)

Is optimism about the economy fueling support for Obama? Will Romney's retooled message be enough to help his campaign rebound after a tough couple of weeks? And what do the latest polls say about remaining 45 days of the race? Our political Roundtable weighs in: Mayor of Atlanta Kasim Reed, senior Romney adviser Bay Buchanan, host of "Morning Joe" Joe Scarborough, David Brooks of the New York Times, and Democratic strategist Dee Dee Myers.

Chuck Todd breaks down the latest polls

ABC This Week
Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus will speak with George Stephanopoulos on the latest in the 2012 presidential contest Sunday on "This Week."

A newly-discovered secret recording of Mitt Romney put his campaign on the defensive, as he faced scrutiny over comments critical of "47 percent" of the country. Can Romney get his campaign back on message with less than 50 days to Election Day? Can he turn the focus to President Obama's first-term record before the critical presidential debates in October?

Obama campaign senior adviser Axelrod and Republican National Committee Chairman Priebus will discuss the latest in the presidential race, Sunday on "This Week."

Plus, the powerhouse roundtable will debate all the week's politics, with Republican strategist and ABC News political analyst and contributor Nicolle Wallace; former Obama domestic policy adviser Melody Barnes; conservative commentator Ann Coulter, author of the new book "Mugged"; Univision anchor Jorge Ramos; and University of California, Berkeley professor and former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich.

After trying to re-set his campaign this week, can Romney put the spotlight on Obama's words about change needing to come from outside Washington? Is President Obama pulling away in key battleground states, or is the race still too close to call? And as both candidates appeared this week before a Univision forum, how will the critical Latino vote influence the election?

Fox News Sunday
One week after the killing of 4 Americans in Benghazi, Libya, the Obama administration has varying accounts of what happened. Was this a spontaneous protest sparked by an anti-Islam film or a terrorist attack? We’ll ask Robert Gibbs, a top adviser to the Obama campaign for reaction.

The presidential campaigns continue to trade jabs over the state of the economy. Mitt Romney went was on the defensive this week clarifying his position, after a videotape surfaced of the GOP nominee at a private fundraiser, discussing the 47 percent of voters who don’t pay federal income taxes. What does the Romney campaign need to do to get back on track? Chris Wallace will talk with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker about the state of the Romney campaign.

CNN State of The Union
Mitt Romney says Obama hasn’t delivered on his promise to change Washington, and Romney tries to control his own message with a late-week tax record dump. Who has the upper hand on campaign strategy as we head into the final weeks of the election? We’ll ask Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham

Then, House Intelligence Chairman Mike Rogers (R) on the emerging questions around possible security lapses in the deadly assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya.

And, as the candidates court the small sliver of voters who haven’t made up their minds in battleground states, we’ll take a closer at the electorate that may hold the keys to the White House. Candy talks to pollsters Whit Ayres and Anna Greenberg. Plus, Susan Page of USA Today and CNN Senior Political Analyst Ron Brownstein.

Sunday Breakfast Menu

Campaign surrogates for each of the candidates have been dispatched to the Sunday shows this week, focusing less on the unrest in the Arab world and more on the economy and current climate of the campaign trail. But first, the candidates themselves will appear on Univision’s “Al Punto” for an in-depth look at their policies and platforms. Telemundo’s “Enfoque” will air an extended version of a sit-down with Mitt Romney, who goes into detail about what some view as problems within his campaign and United States foreign policy toward Mexico and Latin America. Representative Xavier Becerra of California will be on hand to deliver a Democratic rebuttal.
