with very few people. So glad lives were spared.
I only heard of one death so far - a fourteen year old hit by a tree.

(7,286 posts)So, these biologists were studying the mating habits of spotted seatrout , which when they are mating make drumming sounds with the otoliths in their skulls. So they had these microphones tethered to grassy seabeds in the GOM recording the drumming sounds of mating seatrouts.
A hurry-cane came during mating season over the area, and even during the height of the storm the seatrout continued to reproduce. If I recall correctly the activity actually increased. Maybe a survival thing for the species, or to spread the spawn further

(269,352 posts)We get the best yellow tail snapper after storms. The fisherfolks have told me that the sea stirs up big time and more fish reach the surface or close to it.

Not to make light of bad, but my favorite hurry-cane story was during Floyd ( I think) near Cape Canaveral Florida.
This treasure hunter knew there was a wreck near shore so when Floyd whooshed by and it was low tide, a super low tide, he walked out there with a metal detector and found all this Spanish silver coins. He got alot but the tide came in and he could not get it all

(32,017 posts)But it has been less-severe than anticipated. As you rightly note, the worst of Laura hit lightly-populated Cameron Parish. Lake Charles, a city of over 70,000, was in the direct path of the storm, and it endured a 9 foot storm surge (lower than the 10-15 foot surge that had been predicted). Lake Charles is flooded, and theres significant property damage, but it appears, so far, that loss of life has been minimal.
We wont really know for a couple of days, but the general assessment is that we dodged a bullet with Laura.

(269,352 posts)and yes we won't know the real damage for a day or two. That leaking chemical plant is troubling and I hope the floating casino wedged into the I10 bridge hasn't damaged it.

By the way there is an other one just starting the trek across the Atlantic.
