Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI understand these "shock" type store incidences...I was the victim of one.
I posted earlier on this shocking incident at my local supermarket where I have shopped uneventfully for YEARS:
I was told by a store employee: "You know that Joe Biden raped four women." And he smirked when he said it.
This shocking incident left me nearly speechless. I had asked him about the severe shortage of frozen foods. He started to tell me about supply lines during the pandemic. I said I understood and I am glad that our state (CT) is one of the safest from the pandemic. Then he said to me "You aren't going to vote for Biden, are you?" and then his LIE about Joe.
He obviously thought this was in response to me giving a big endorsement of our Dem. governor Ned Lamont (who, btw, deserves praise for his handling of the crisis).
well, I reported him to the manager who gave him a warning. He was also told to apologize to me personally which I have yet to get.
Now I see shocking behavior (caught on cellphone and posted in social media) by these "crazy" people in stores, gas stations etc and I wonder if there isn't some sort of "planned disruption" as a form of "owning the libs" going on here.
I am glad that this behavior is being shown here on DU.
Who knows. Anyway, I appreciate having these "incidents" posted here on DU. Keep it up!

(1,047 posts)then announce you won't buy them because (employee name goes here) is bothering me with his election politics while I am shopping.
When it costs money and time, the employee will be shown the door. There are more of us than there are of him.

(63,927 posts)I also told him that being old, I depended on that store for my vitally needed prescriptions as well as the food I and my husband need. AND, I praised the other staff members who were unfailingly polite and helpful to me. I wanted to sound sane and calm, but purposeful.
I'll keep folks posted if any further incidences occur.

He shouldn't believe it just because somebody on the radio or television says it to him. I'll believe that when it's proven in court
Apparently, he has dismissed all the credible accusations of sexual assault by over a dozen women and an admission by trump that he grabs women by the pussy and they let him do it.
And apparently, he doesn't know that a judge has told trump he can't keep stonewalling the woman he reportedly raped in her effort to get his dna so she can match it to the semen on her dress
Apparently he believes someone on tv rather than a woman whose case is advancing in the court
I hope this case moves quickly. That'd be a great October surprise

(14,863 posts)Once upon a time, it was considered extremely rude to inject religion or politics into a conversation about something else. I'm glad you reported him.

(10,054 posts)I applaud you for your quick thinking, reporting him to his manager was the best course of action. I would have been so shocked I don't know what I would have said or done....

(63,927 posts)I cast it in terms of my advanced age and my being a caregiver for my disabled husband (both true). The guy is unusually tall (nearly 7 ft. is my estimation) so he towers over everybody else.
He's a member of the local union (which I support completely) and I'll bet he hates his union and I'll bet the feeling is mutual.
I'm just waiting for the day after election day, if we know who has won yet. If things go as it looks like they will, I hope I'll run into him in the store and say "Hi, there, it's a beautiful day today, isn't it?"

(32,017 posts)Theyve been doing this kind of thing since Karl Rove was running campaigns, and probably much earlier.
Its always some kind of (usually baseless) salacious rumor about a particular candidates sexual deviance. Rove liked to start these kinds of rumors in law schools and then let them spread from there. They can be effective once the rumor mill gets cranked up.
The best response is, No. I dont know that and you dont either. You shouldnt believe everything you hear.
I should add that Democrats have used rumor mill tactics like this as well, but the Republicans have turned it into an art form.

(61,812 posts)Normally I would be inclined not to get an employee in trouble but that was shocking.
I think you're right that websites and hate radio hosts are encouraging people to "speak up." Our best response is to calmly refute the lies and calmly report people who threaten violence or cross the line in interacting with us as customers.
Businesses don't want their employees confronting customers with political statements that accuse others of rape.

(3,761 posts)My usual come back to the 'not-knowers' is that I will believe them when they can show me contemporary Polaroids of the whatever.
We know the 'know-nots' do not have facts, nor logic, nor morality (when bearing false witness) to support rumor and gossip.
They can't be convinced that unknown web-crawlers' statements are not valid means of knowledge. "Everybody says" is not rational evidence. Sally at the supermarket and Bill the butcher are not conspiracist-peer-review competent.
Or reply, "Did you know you're being bullshitted and seem to consume it willingly."

The King's Speech is a 2010 British historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Colin Firth plays the future King George VI who, to cope with a stammer, sees Lionel Logue, an Australian speech and language therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. The men become friends as they work together, and after his brother abdicates the throne, the new king relies on Logue to help him make his first wartime radio broadcast upon Britain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939.

I really had to force myself to watch it (DVD from Netflix, blah, blah, blah), but it kept me enthralled until the end.
I literally had to buy more tissues the next day.
I don't know why, but stuff like that always gets me going.

(7,411 posts)well beyond normal behavior these days. They love to pick at scabs if they sense an opening. It is more than just ignorance, it is cruel, sadistic and prevalent. It goes beyond what most of us would consider normal political discourse and it is getting worse.

(70 posts)... I was taking my trash to the community dump. I was listening to NPR and turned it up so I could hear it while I unloaded my truck. The news went to a story of then president-elect Trump and the attendant shouted "go Trump!" I have the unfortunate appearance, I think, of a stereotypical right wing ideologue, yeah, sucks to be me in that respect, so he must have thought I was of like mind. When he said that I thought "Great, now I have to put up with this sh** for the next four years, wait a minute, no I don't." So I said, "Go to hell." The attendant got very quiet and he helped me unload my trash. If the setting is where they work you might be able to humble them.

(7,968 posts)these willfully ignorant people see their world and their beliefs falling apart before their eyes. They are desperate and could do anything. I expect it will get significantly worse after November 3rd because then the die will be cast and they will have failed. With nothing to lose (they ignorantly believe) they may strike out at those they perceive as "liberals."

(63,927 posts)"You know, Ryan, I know you hate it up here in liberal CT. Why don't you find a nice job in a red state where you'd have lots of friends who feel just like you do. AND, you wouldn't have a pesky union that you've got to hate. Of course, you wouldn't have a good wage there either, but you'd be union free! And, of course, no benefits either. Oh, and the Covid's real bad down there, too, but you have your freedom not to have to wear a mask! Think of that!"

(63,927 posts)Now I understand that this kind of off the wall attack is designed to put you off kilter. The best thing to say is "I know your right wing handlers have told you to say this, because it is so off the wall. So I am aware of this tactic. Don't bother wasting your time, buddy. Now why don't you just run along."

(26,355 posts)If we're talking about a troll or a Russian bot, or some hack, yeah, I'd take your approach.
But I've also gotten some of these facts from people I know, some from childhood.
That's when I start with "Where did you hear that?" I want to hear their source. I'll tell them "You made the claim, support it. Where's your evidence?" If the person doesn't know, or got it from some Facebook meme, or from some conspiracy site or Alex Jones or similar nonsense, that's when I teach them a lesson about believing everything they read on the Internet. Though it's amazing how offended some people get when I Snopes their ass.
It's even more entertaining when they try to Snopes me and come back an hour later sputtering "Well, I guess that wasn't really true, what REALLY happened was..." My advice to them: when you're already in a hole, stop digging.

(13,082 posts)button onto my sun visor so it's right above my forehead & clearly visible. I've worn it everywhere - groceries stores visits, Costco, trail walks, walking the dog, etc. I've seen a couple people smirk (like the guy with Hillary for Prison tshirt last week) or look the other way , and others smile & greet but so far no one has said anything either offensive or supportive to me. If they did say something derogatory i surely would have returned the favor.
