Here's one thing: The number we were told was Mittens' income for 2011, $13.7 million, was his adjusted gross income, not his gross income. There are tons of possible "above-the-line" deductions (deductions from gross income) he could have taken, and probably did take, which would mean that his actual income was far greater than $13.7 million. He donated $4 million to charity, of which $2.6 million went to the LDS Church, but took a deduction of only $2.25 million so that he could say he'd pay 14.1% (more than the 13% from last year) (and, of course, he can file an amended return later to take the whole deduction). Since the Mormons require their members to tithe, it's possible to assume that his actual income was $26 million. If that's the case, that $1.9 million tax bill represents only about 7%. Of course, it's possible that he gave the church more than was required. But I'd sure like to know what his gross income was.
